Trailblazing Young Innovator

For co-founding an inventive start-up that is revolutionising sustainable dental care, Business Studies student Lingesh Sachuvanantham took home the Gold Award at the 2024 POL-ITE Entrepreneurs' Challenge (PET Category). Apart from a $10,000 cash prize, Kloss Solutions has also secured funding to expand production of its reusable dental floss, which eliminates single-use plastic dental floss picks. The prestigious award recognises young entrepreneurs who are making an impact in Singapore’s start-up scene.

Fintech Frontrunners

A group of five Banking & Finance (BF) students were named Grand Champions at the PolyFinTech 100 API Hackathon 2024 held as part of the Singapore Fintech Festival.

BF’s Team Bullseye – comprising Jaydon Chua, Cheyenne Choy, Denzel Lai, Koh Kai Ming, and Leo Kai Zhi – clinched the top title with TrustBuddy, an AI-powered solution that protects users, especially the elderly, from fraud and scams.

Design Students Shine on Regional Stage

Three students from our School of Design & Environment (DE) emerged as winners at the 2024 AYDA Awards (formerly known as Asia Young Designer Awards) under the Interior Design Category. Edwin Choo En Ding won both the Best Green Innovation and Bronze awards, while Vaness Tan Yu Ling and Wang Yu Peng received the silver and bronze awards respectively. The AYDA Awards celebrates innovative designs in spatial design and recognises the brightest minds in architecture and design in Asia.

Star Designers

Five design students specialising in Product Innovation participated in the Singapore Star Packaging Awards 2024 and emerged winners in this prestigious national competition. Their achievements earned them the honour of representing Singapore at the WorldStar Packaging Awards 2024, one of the most renowned global competitions in the industry. At the international competition, Phoebe Wong clinched the Bronze medal, while Teo Kaiser, Rachel Tng, and Chang Haozhe received Commendation Awards.

Chinese Language Talents Sweep Top Prizes

Five Chinese Studies (CHS) students swept prizes at the 23rd Chinese Bridge International Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, a major global contest celebrating Chinese language and cultural proficiency.

In the Singapore leg of the competition, Lim Mei Xin won first prize, earning her the opportunity to represent the nation at the global finals. Ace Lim and Chen Jia Lin both clinched the second prize, while Angel Wong En Ze and Ao Ieong Hung Xing were awarded the third Prize.

At the global finals held in China, Mei Xin competed against 147 international participants and achieved the feat of being placed in the top 10.

Hacking their Way to Gold

Nursing students Tan Pui Lok, Natasha Tan, and Miranda Tan proudly brought home the Gold Award at HACK CARE: YOLO 2024, an innovation challenge organised by the Singapore Hospice Council. Their winning project, Legacy Odyssey, sought to raise awareness and spark meaningful conversations about living well and leaving a legacy by reimagining conversations about death and palliative care. Through gamified experiences on an interactive platform, the team turned difficult end-of-life discussions into honest dialogues and impactful learning.

Championing Community and Conservation

Nursing student Shantini D/O Subramanian was awarded the prestigious National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Gold Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to community service and leadership. From uplifting less fortunate communities to campaigning for wildlife protection, Shantini’s strong sense of purpose has made her an inspiring role model to her peers and the wider community.

A Striking Win

Mass Communication (MCM) student Ashley Lok struck gold with her stunning performance at the Asian Junior Tenpin Bowling Championships, winning the girls’ masters title on her second appearance. Ashley’s latest victory adds to an impressive haul from the 2022 edition, where she bagged the singles gold, doubles silver, and team bronze.

Category Champ for World Robot Olympiad

NP Biomedical Science (BMS) student Lee Wei Jun and his team represented Singapore at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) International Finals 2024 and won the National Champions trophy in the WRO Future Innovators Senior category. The trio went on to represent Singapore at the WRO International Finals in Izmir, Turkey.

Achieving Roaring Success

NP students made a strong showing at the Singapore University of Technology and Design-organised RoboRoarZ International 2024, a competition focused on the design of reconfigurable robotics using the innovative “Smorphi” platform.

In the hands-on Smorphi Robotics Challenge, for which teams built and tested physical robots, our Engineering Science (ES) team clinched first place, while our Automation & Mechatronic Systems (AMS) team came in second. For the virtual Smorphi Imaginary Robotics Challenge, two ES teams won second and fourth place, while the AMS team came in third.

Award-Winning Robotics

Students from our Automation & Mechatronic Systems and Electronic & Computer Engineering courses represented NP at the 29th Tsuyama Robot Contest (Robocon) in Japan. Competing alongside 23 international teams, they impressed judges with their innovative robot which featured a flywheel shooting mechanism, servo-controlled chain-based rollers, and a tilted roller conveyor for swift puck intake and accurate shots. Their creativity and teamwork earned them the Best Idea Award.

NP Shines at SG BusTech 2024

A team of students from our School of Engineering was placed second runner-up at the SG BusTech Grand Challenge 2024. Designed for students from Institutes of Higher Learning, the competition spotlights emerging talent in automotive engineering and encourages participants to explore engineering careers in Singapore’s land transport sector.

NP Team Tops Materials Innovation Challenge

Engineering Science (ES) students Karille Maeven Santos Cabael and Lean Min Tong emerged as first place winners in the Materials Innovation Challenge 2024 organised by the Nanyang Technological University, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and Surbana Jurong.

Innovating for Good

A team of six Information Technology students from our School of InfoComm Technology (ICT) – Caden Toh Jun Yi, Ong Meng Li, Quah Ming Hui, Rafol Emmanuel Legaspi, S. Sairam, and Noel Yap Bao Xuan – clinched the first prize at Dell Technologies’ InnovateFest 2024. Their winning solution supports persons with intellectual disabilities by using guided scenarios to help them build social-interaction skills.

Generating Impact for the Community

NP’s Impact Colliders – a team comprising final-year Banking & Finance student Jocelyn Chng Hui Pheng, and Business Studies graduate Avin Taishiran Teo – won the RHBHacks 2025, a hackathon sponsored by Mapletree Investments and supported by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI).

Their winning entry, “Eh How Ah?”, is a card game designed to increase digital literacy among seniors. The team received $5,000 in kickstart funding and was invited to showcase their game at a public event during River Hongbao 2025.

Modelling After Success

A total of twelve NP students from four of our academic schools formed five teams and participated in the Singapore Model Parliament (SMP) hosted by REACH Singapore.

During the three-day event, participants attended policymaking workshops, engaged in dialogues with political leaders, and showcased their debate skills in the final competition. One team placed third in the mock parliamentary debate, with Fatima Musharrat, an International Trade & Business student winning Best Speaker.

Celebrating our Future Defence Leaders

Five NP alumni who demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential received prestigious awards at the Defence Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

Aerospace Engineering graduates Yithro Teo and Kieran Wong Jiing Xun received the SAF Engineering Scholarship and Public Service Commission (Engineering) Scholarship - Defence & Security, respectively.

Three of our alumni received SAF Merit Scholarships: Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics graduate Chua Che Khai will pursue a degree in Information Security at the National University of Singapore (NUS); Biomedical Science graduate Lee Hong Kang will further his studies in Biomedical Science at King’s College London; while Electrical & Computer Engineering graduate Koh Yong En will study for a degree in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence at the University of Nottingham.

Scholastic Achievements

We are proud of our alumni who have gone on to receive highly regarded scholarships for their further studies. Here are some notable achievements:

Jerome Ching, a graduate from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology’s (LSCT) Biomedical Science (BMS) course was awarded the Public Service Commission (PSC) Open Scholarship.

BMS graduates Zavier Ong and Cheng Mei Lin were each awarded scholarships for further studies in Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Medicine programme and National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Dentistry programme.

Nur Afiqah Binte Mohammad Rizal was accepted into the Doctor of Medicine programme at Duke-NUS Medical School, and nine other BMS graduates and Pharmaceutical Science students were awarded places at NUS to pursue degrees in Pharmacy.

From the School of Health Sciences, nursing graduate Kou Zi Qian received a scholarship to study Medicine at NUS.

Early Childhood Development & Education (ECDE) graduate Denise Teng Jia Xuan from the School of Humanities & Interdisciplinary Studies was awarded the MSF Scholarship and is currently pursuing a double major in Social Work and Global Studies at NUS. Fellow ECDE graduate Carisse Wong Ke Ning received the NCSS Social Service Scholarship and is furthering her studies in Speech & Language Therapy at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).

Tay Hui Ann, a graduate of the Diploma in Community Development (renamed Psychology & Community Development), clinched the NCSS Social Service Scholarship and is now studying Social Work at NUS.

Engineering Science (ES) graduate Joshua Tan from the School of Engineering was awarded the prestigious Home Team Science & Technology (HTX) Scholarship and is currently in his fourth year as a Physics major with a minor in Computer Science at NUS.

ES graduate Alson Jiang Mingyang was selected for the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) Merit Scholarship and is now in his second year of Bachelor of Engineering (Engineering Science) programme at NUS.

Another ES alumnus, Timothy Wong Jia Sheng, received the Singtel Engineering Cadet Scholarship and is currently completing his final year in SIT’s Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics Systems).

Mass Communication graduate Gracelyn Lim Xin Yin from the School of Film & Media Studies received the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading (LKY-STEP) Award in recognition of her strong academic performance and involvement in co-curricular activities.

Distinguished International Honour

Business Studies graduate Samuel Lee Zhe Feng received the Freedom of the City of London, granted by Professor Michel Mainelli, the 695th Lord Mayor of London.

Samuel was one of 26 international postgraduate scholars to receive the award, an honour given to individuals who have made significant contributions in their fields. Notably, he is among the pioneer batch of the Lord Mayor’s “Connect to Prosper” programme, which brings together leading experts from diverse backgrounds to address critical global challenges.

2024 Prestige Singapore 40 Under 40

Recognised for being revolutionaries in their industries, two of our distinguished alumni from the School of Business & Accountancy (BA) and School of Humanities & Interdisciplinary Studies (HMIS) made the 2024 Prestige Singapore 40 Under 40 list.

Business & Social Enterprise graduate Clarence Ching was honoured for his transformative work as the founder and executive director of Access Singapore, which advances social mobility by providing career guidance and creating opportunities for disadvantaged students.

Tourism & Resort Management graduate Matthew Zeng was recognised for founding DSTNCT, an award-winning creative agency. Known for its keen understanding of consumer psychology, DSTNCT helps businesses and government agencies effectively connect with their audiences. Matthew was also featured on the Tatler Gen.T 2024 list for making public sector advertising fun and memorable.

Honouring Excellence in Facilities Management

Shirly Tan Hui Min, a School of Design & Environment graduate, was recognised as Emerging Professional of the Year by the International Facilities Management Association at the World Workplace Asia/Asia-Pacific Best of FM Awards 2024.

With a decade of experience in Facilities Management (FM) – including overseeing operations spanning 240,000 m² of gross floor area – Shirly is now an Executive (Digital) in the Innovation & Sustainability Unit at SMM Pte Ltd.

Top-notch Photojournalist

Mass Communication graduate Shintaro Tay's dynamic ability to tell compelling stories through photography, text and video was acknowledged through two coveted wins. Apart from The Straits Times' Young Journalist of the Year award, he also received the silver award in Best Feature Photography at the Asian Media Awards for his stunning image of Arc Zero: Nimbus, an installation by Australian artist James Tapscott. Shintaro's portfolio also includes photojournalistic coverage of the closure of the iconic Thambi Magazine Store in Holland Village.

Cinematic Gold

Chinese Media & Communication alumni, Goh Hui Teng Sheryl, Ng Yu Sung, Lee Xin'en, and Adrian Tay claimed the top prize in the Student Category at the 5th Micro Film Competition Awards Ceremony organised by the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA), Singapore Chinese Cultural Club (SCCC) and Lianhe Zaobao.

In line with the "My Singapore Rhapsody" competition theme, their film《一念之差》 (“A False Step”) highlights Singapore's unique culture in a heartwarming comedy about a clumsy influencer who must find her lost passport before her plane departs. Director and writer Yu Sung was also nominated for the Best Director Award.

Next-Gen Technology Trailblazers

Two of our alumni bagged awards at the POL-ITE Entrepreneurs' Challenge (Alumni Track).

Business Studies (BS) graduate Jonathan Oh won the Gold Award for Gignite.ai, an AI-powered prototyping platform that empowers non-technical users to transform ideas into software prototypes in just 15 minutes.

Information Technology graduate Tan Jian Zhen and his teammates from NUS, Nicholas Cheng and April Chan, clinched the Bronze Award for Trace, a solution that simplifies process documentation by enabling teams to instantly create user-friendly how-to guides, boosting productivity and streamlining workflows for customer success as well as HR and IT teams worldwide.

Triumph in Venice

NP Film, Sound & Video alumna Tan Si En, co-founder of Singapore-based Momo Film Co, produced the Vietnamese horror-comedy “Don’t Cry, Butterfly”, which won two awards at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival. A cross-genre piece that features comedy, fantasy and horror, this sole Asian title in the Critics’ Week line-up took home the top prize for Best Film and the Verona Film Club Award for Most Innovative Film.

Newly-Minted Doctor of Philosophy

Congratulations to LSCT alumnus Tio Wee for completing his Doctor of Philosophy at Nanyang Technological University in July 2024. Dr Tio Wee specialises in Nanomaterials, Surface Science, and Membrane Research.

Championing Good

NP was conferred the prestigious Champion of Good Award by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre. The only Institute of Higher Learning to receive this distinctive honour, the award acknowledges NP’s sustained commitment to integrating social responsibility into our core mission and the positive impact of our community-focused and social sustainability efforts.

Innovation Excellence

NP took home multiple awards at the prestigious Ministry of Education (MOE) Innergy Awards 2024.

The School of Health Sciences team received the Commendation Award for their innovative project, “Collaborative Learning through a Team-Based Learning (TBL) Approach”. Featuring a technology-enabled framework introduced in the Nurse Management & Professional Development module, the team designed collaborative learning experiences to effectively boost student engagement and learning.

Our School of Design & Environment also received the Commendation Award for “DE Experience (DEX)”, a five-day programme focused on sustainability, technology and design. Highlights include industry learning journeys, and a hackathon centred on real-world problem statements.

NP's School of Engineering (SOE) won the Bronze Award for developing and deploying the Singapore Police Force Community Engagement Robot (also known as “CODY”). Developed in consultation with the Home Team Science & Technology Agency (HTX) as well as the Singapore Police Force, CODY engages with members of the public to disseminate crime prevention messages.

Robotic Engineering Feat

In October 2024, the School of Engineering also clinched the Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) for the development and deployment of CODY. The award recognises projects with outstanding engineering skills with significant contribution to the engineering progress and quality of life in Singapore.

Leader in Cybersecurity Education

NP clinched the EC-Council Academia Circle of Excellence Award for the third consecutive year, affirming our commitment to delivering high-quality cybersecurity education and developing the talent pipeline for this growing field. Presented by EC-Council – the world’s largest cybersecurity technical certification body – the Award honours institutions and individuals that have made exceptional contributions in cybersecurity education.
