Turn Your Intern into Your Brand Advocate

26 Mar 2026

Whether you are a seasoned internship supervisor or new to hosting interns, you play a pivotal role in shaping the experience – from short-term support to future talent, and ultimately, a genuine advocate for your organisation.

It is no secret that internship positions filled by students from local institutes of higher learning serve as opportunities for companies to identify strong candidates for full-time roles. But beyond a potential new hire, the fresh-faced student walking through your office door can also be a champion of your brand, someone who voluntarily promotes your company, products or services through positive word-of-mouth.

How can internship supervisors unlock this? Let Impact share three intentional steps that you can take.

1. Start with Clarity

Students wish for a clear start – a warm introduction to the team, a task that they feel equipped to handle, and one person they can ask without feeling like they are interrupting. These fundamentals determine if an intern settles in fast or spends their initial week feeling uncertain and searching for answers.

“I was welcomed into a supportive environment and given clear guidance from the start. Knowing I could turn to – both my mentor, Jia Xin, and the rest of the team made it easier to settle in and build my confidence. They trusted me with meaningful responsibilities and encouraged me to explore my creativity. My internship has been an experience I’ve been proud to share with my family and friends.”

2. Put Work in Context

Almost every intern seeks a purposeful work experience during which they get to work on real-world projects (better yet if they can cite these in their LinkedIn profiles!). Got a task that requires your intern’s support? Be sure to explain the relevance of the task, even if menial, and how it supports or adds value to your team’s function. Consequently, your intern will see the bigger picture – and thank you for it.

When interns feel their contributions matter, they develop a greater sense of ownership, fuelling passion, creativity and, yes, even innovation.

“We’ve opened our doors to close to 60 NP interns in recent years and make it a point to help interns see how their work contributes to the bigger picture. When they understand the 'why' behind their tasks, they take greater ownership, deliver stronger work and build confidence through hands on projects and regular guidance – while developing practical, industry-relevant skills.”

3. Coach with Care

Interns want to know how they are doing. At the end of each project or key task, take a moment to share what they have done well, and where they can grow. Thoughtful, timely feedback not only creates valuable learning moments, but also helps interns feel seen and recognised for their contributions.

Over time, this builds confidence and a stronger sense of ownership in their work. By the end of the work stint, your intern will walk away with new skills, and a deeper understanding of your organisation. They will also carry a genuine appreciation for the mentorship they received. That’s what transforms a meaningful internship into one they’ll proudly talk about – and turns your intern into an authentic advocate for your brand.

Three Simple Steps to an Impactful Internship

A clear start, putting meaning into tasks, and thoughtful project wrap-ups are small shifts, but they can often make a big difference to your intern’s experience. And even if they don’t become your future hire, you would have gained a brand advocate.
