Ideas for Industry, Learning from Industry

14 Nov 2025

Looking for fresh ideas for your company’s marketing campaigns? Pick the creative brains of our Film & Media students who came up with viral marketing ideas and AI-powered solutions at the M:idea Fest hackathon. Read on to find out how you can tap this resource for your business and contribute to our students’ learning.

Second-year students from the School of Film & Media Studies (FMS) took part in the annual M:idea Fest hackathon where they tackled real-world business challenges put forth by industry partners Mediacorp, SPH Media, GOMO Singtel, and Collective Perspectives.

At the end of the hackathon, they came up with innovative solutions, including one that uses an AI-powered content intelligence tool to help users stay in the loop with the local youth landscape. Cheekily named “Wah Lao Watchdog”, the concept focused on the sharing of hyper-local content to attract eyeballs. The team that presented this idea, Ctrl+Create, won a Mediacorp internship and an invitation to networking events, on top of a one-year subscription to meWATCH Prime.

“The hackathon gave us an opportunity to develop solutions for industry challenges,” shared Phoebe Ng, one of the four students from Ctrl+Create. “Through the experience, we learnt that the best solutions need to be both creative and practical to implement.”

Insights from Industry Gurus

Apart from the hackathon, close to 500 students gleaned insights into the latest media trends shared by illustrious speakers hailing from notable media brands such as The Woke Salaryman, Our Grandfather Story, mm2 and Oceanus Media Global. Among the speakers were alumni of FMS – He Ruiming and Goh Wei Choon, who co-founded multi-platform personal finance blog The Woke Salaryman; Tong Khoon Mun, senior producer at mm2 Entertainment; as well as C-suite leaders like Nick Tan, CEO of Oceanus Media Global.

“The students of today will become the collaborators and partners of the future. Making connections with them not only allows us to prepare them to be industry-ready, but it also lets us hear from them and be inspired by their perspectives. This keeps us attuned to youth ideas and preferences – one of the key facets of mm2's Y2Y (Youth To Youth) Initiative.”
