Scaling the WorldSkills Stage

NP students showcased their technical excellence and industry readiness at WorldSkills Singapore 2025, with standout performances across a range of skill areas.

Among the top performers were Automation & Mechatronics Systems* (AMS) alumnus Cedric Yau and Mechanical Engineering (ME) alumnus Alvin Ang who went on to win Gold at WorldSkills ASEAN 2025.

At the national level, NP secured four Gold medals, three Bronze medals, and five Medallions for Excellence across a range of disciplines. The winners are as follows:

Sweeping the Top Honours

Fourteen Accountancy students delivered outstanding performances at the National Tax Competition, with their teams securing the top three positions in the Polytechnic Category.

Hosted by Nanyang Technological University, the 16th edition brought together over 300 participants across 62 teams from polytechnics and universities nationwide. Taking on the role of tax advisors, NP’s teams tackled complex business scenarios and developed well-reasoned solutions.

FinTech Whizzes

Our students from the School of Business & Accountancy delivered a strong showing at the PolyFinTech100 API Hackathon 2025, a national FinTech innovation platform for polytechnic students.

Team Teen Titans secured the first runner-up position with their “ShieldSense 360” solution, a smart health insurance advisor that offers personalised insights for Gen Z users. The team comprised Business Studies (BS) students Tan Yi Lin, Caton Tan, and Lee Ke Xuan, as well as Accountancy student Malvan Tan, and International Trade & Business student Chow Hong Wei.

Another team known as A Group of Very Stern Bears placed second runner-up with an AI-driven platform delivering hyper-personalised wealth management insights for ultra-high-net-worth clients. Team members were Banking & Finance (BF) students Jocelyn Chng, Venice Ng, Jesslin Liang, and Peter Chong, together with BS student Scott Sofian.

Team Quantara received the merit award for “FinSense”, an AI-powered platform that enhances client engagement and supports personalised wealth planning. The team comprised BF student Lai Xin Rou and Information Technology student Raeanne Zou.

Award-Winning Sustainability Innovation

Team SDGeniuses from NP’s School of Business & Accountancy were crowned champions at the 2025 City Developments Limited (CDL) – Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS) Young SDG Leaders Award, which challenges youths to develop business solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Their winning project, “K-CALC”, is an AI-powered dashboard developed for global shipping company “K” Line Pte. Ltd. The solution helps track and reduce Scope 3 emissions through automated carbon data management. The team presented "K-CALC" at the UNGCN Singapore Summit, with Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development Ms Indranee Rajah, and CDL Chief Sustainability Officer Ms Esther An in attendance.

Shaping Innovative Tourism Experiences

Tourism & Resort Management students Ilka Puteri Masuri and Zoe Teo, together with their Japanese and Korean teammates, took home the Grand Prize at the TTBiz Tourism competition. The annual competition challenges students from different countries to develop sustainable travel itineraries and innovative tourism concepts for Japan.

Competing as Team Nova, the six-member team developed a five-day, four-night wellness retreat in Shikoku, Japan, catered to university students. For their proposal – which stood out for its rigour and practicality – the team received an all-expenses-paid study tour to Tokyo.

Our Nation’s Changemakers

Business Studies graduate Clarrie Chang and Banking & Finance student Tang Shean Sing were awarded the National Youth Achievement Award (Gold) by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam in December 2025. They were recognised for their contribution to society through their development of leadership skills, and coordination of local and international opportunities for youths.

Young adults who undergo this self-development programme are awarded the Gold Award after having spent over 18 months engaging in service learning, outdoor appreciation, healthy living, and a community leadership initiative.

Solutioning for a Better Future in Tourism

NP students showcased their creativity at the Singapore Hospitality & Tourism Conference (SHTC) hackathon, held in conjunction with ITB Asia. Supported by masterclasses and mentoring from Marina Bay Sands, participants developed technology-driven concepts to enhance the tourism sector.

From a group of over 50 contestants, teams from the School of Business & Accountancy and the School of Design & Environment placed first runner-up and third runner-up respectively.

The Tourism & Resort Management team developed a gamified concept that showcased Marina Bay Sands' sustainability initiatives to MICE and leisure travellers. Separately, our Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management team proposed a solution that balanced sustainability objectives with guest comfort.

Our Young Design Talents

Students from our School of Design & Environment received 20 industry awards at GradSpark 2026: Design IRL – a showcase featuring 65 projects from graduating Design students. The event was graced by DesignSingapore Council Executive Director, Ms Dawn Lim.

Brandon Kuan, Chloe Chong, and Lai Zer Jynn received the Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes respectively for the Singapore Green Building Council awards.

In the Design Challenges: Reimagine Play at Northpoint City competition by Frasers Property, Samuel Tan won First Prize while Tan Hui Ying placed second. Chloee Ng, Chloe Chong, Lai Zer Jynn, Lee Hui Yun, and Tan Li Wen received Commendation awards.

The REVO Challenge Competition by Omni Devices recognised students for their innovative designs. Tang Yu Jia received Gold, Megan Ho was awarded Silver, Eunice Pang clinched Bronze, while Go Ruo Qi, Jaslyn Chan, and Noor Irfan Rahmatdin attained Merit awards.

Gerard Mark Tan, Joshua Tsao, Noor Irfan Rahmatdin, and Ong Shiang Hui received Distinction awards under the Schaeffler-NP Industry Collaboration (Schaeffler Group).

Designing for a Cause

Design student Ashlee Low from NP’s School of Design & Environment received a Merit prize at the President’s Logo Challenge Design competition. Ashlee’s submission was one of over 150 entries from students across polytechnics, Institutes of Technical Education, and the University of the Arts Singapore.

Doing Good for the Built Environment Sector

NP’s Hotel & Leisure Facilities Management (HLFM) students Ryan Shafiq, Eu Zhi Bin, Lavonne Lee, and Germaine Teoh received the Excellence Award at the Smart City Development and Innovation Competition 2026.

The competition brought together students from across China and ASEAN to develop innovative solutions for urban development, intelligent construction, green buildings, and smart communities.

Roaring Ahead of the Pack

NP’s School of Engineering students performed well at RoboRoarZ Singapore 2026, a competition centred on reconfigurable robotics using the Smorphi platform.

Teams from Engineering Science and Mechatronics & Robotics clinched first and fourth place respectively in the Robotics Simulation Challenge. The competition brought together over 380 students from across Singapore and Asia to tackle live, simulation-based, and AI-driven robotics challenges.

Robotics Champions

Second-year Engineering Science and Aerospace Engineering students won first place at the National Robotics Competition (Autonomous) Competition. The team programmed the Smorphi robot to navigate the playing field autonomously and maximise area coverage.

Organised annually by Science Centre Singapore, the competition is supported by the Ministry of Education and industry partners.

Emerging Talent in the Space Frontier

Students from Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics & Robotics placed second in the Space Data Series competition. Teams were challenged to leverage satellite imagery, remote sensing, and machine learning to tackle problem statements using observational data.

The competition was organised by Space Faculty, a global network of experts from government agencies, deep-tech organisations, and non-governmental organisations.

International Theatre Experience

Media Post-Production* students Shannon Lim and Fe Goh represented NP’s School of Film & Media Studies at the Asian Youth Theatre Festival 2025 (AYTF 2025) in Vientiane, Laos. Selected to join the festival’s technical team, they supported live production across multiple performances, gaining first-hand experience in an international theatre production environment. The festival also offered opportunities to collaborate with emerging theatre practitioners from across Asia.

Hacking for Better Mental Health

Students from our School of Humanities & Interdisciplinary Studies emerged as champions in the Emotional Well-Being category at 3IGHACK 2025, the inaugural youth hackathon organised by the Stewardship Asia Centre.

Competing against local and international teams, they developed an immersive multi-sensory room designed to help youths better understand and navigate mental health challenges. Prize funding will support a pilot at NP before the concept is expanded to public spaces.

A New Generation of Youth Corps Leaders

For their commitment to community service and social impact, 10 NP students were recognised as Youth Corps Leaders at the Youth Corps Singapore Commencement Ceremony in May.

Bathar Nishar Barvin, Felicia Chuang, Loke Wai Yee, and Shannen Pang completed the Youth Corps Community Internship (Leaders Track). Through internships with social service agencies, they led volunteer initiatives and strengthened their leadership skills.

Clarrie Chang, Gladys Goh, Law Jun Jie, Li Xinyi, Shalini D/O Radja Ssegaran, and Shantini D/O Subramaniam completed the one-year Youth Corps Leaders Programme. Guided by mentors from social service agencies, they developed and delivered projects that addressed community needs.

Reimagining Film with AI

First-year Chinese Media & Communication students Sophia Ng and Adrea Lim received the Best Use of AI award in the Student Category at the GENflick AI Microfilm Challenge for their microfilm, “The Phoenix's Door to New Beginnings”. Organised by Republic Polytechnic's School of Technology for the Arts and supported by industry partners Adobe, Alibaba, Google, and Mediacorp, the competition invited participants to harness AI tools to create original two-minute microfilms.

Displaying Anatomical Mastery

Nursing students Tan Zi Yiu and Zin Min Thet from NP’s School of Health Sciences were recognised for their outstanding performance at Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) LKC Anatomy Challenge. Demonstrating strong anatomical knowledge and applied problem-solving skills, Tan Zi Yiu received a Distinction Award, while Zin Min Thet earned a Merit Award.

Turning Problems into Tech Solutions

A student team from NP’s School of InfoComm Technology was crowned Grand Champion at the AI-GNITION AI Agent Hackathon for their innovative use of AI to streamline data entry.

Inspired by challenges encountered during part-time work, they developed “Parsely”, an AI-powered platform that automates data extraction from financial documents. By reducing manual effort and minimising errors, the solution helps businesses improve efficiency when managing large volumes of invoices.

Technology for Independent Living

NP’s School of InfoComm Technology students Jeffrey Lee, Wu Enjia, Amos Goh, Ian Lim, and Ethan Chew won first place in the Polytechnic category at Dell InnovateFest 2025 with their AI-powered solution, “MindEase”. The annual inter-tertiary school competition promotes the use of AI skills and innovation to create solutions that address social challenges.

Their winning solution, “MindEase”, is a smartwatch app that supports emotional regulation, independent navigation, and emergency communication, while giving caregivers added reassurance and peace of mind.

Smart Nation Award Recipients

Information Technology students Jovan Ong, Jeffrey Lee, Kelvin Tan, and Putera Daniel, received the Lee Hsien Loong Interactive Digital Media Smart Nation Award 2025. The award recognises projects that advance Singapore's Smart Nation vision through meaningful applications of technology.

Their award-winning app, “FallSafe”, uses Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and cloud-native technologies to help seniors assess their fall risk at home. By enabling early detection of potential hazards, the solution supports safer and more independent living for seniors.

Rising AI Talent

Our School of InfoComm Technology students excelled at the National Olympiad in AI, a nationwide competition co-organised by AI Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics student Hu Bowen was among 15 Gold recipients. Data Science* students Tej S/O Suresh Kumar and Tey Xue Cong, together with Information Technology students Alexander Koh and Sean Ulric Buguina Chua, received Bronze awards. Additionally, Information Technology student Aathithya Jegatheesan was recognised with a participation certificate.

Young Scientist in the Spotlight

Biomedical Science student Nurul Huda Helmi represented NP’s School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology at the Young Scientists’ Symposium 2026. Presenting her capstone project, “Risk Determinants of Ill Health”, she received the Merit Prize in the Three Minute Final Year Project Presentation category.

Fighting Against Glacier Loss

A team of Environmental & Water Technology* students emerged victorious at the Glacier Loss Challenge at the Xylem Global Student Innovation Challenge 2025.

Lin Sundong, Clara Kuah, Siasat Giselle See, Annika Beh, and Ayla Lo developed an app to help communities understand flood risks arising from glacier loss and climate change. Their solution combines education, preparedness tools, and actionable resources to strengthen community resilience in the face of extreme weather events.

Award-Winning Student Start-Up

Electronic & Computer Engineering student Ian Lee, co-founder of AI-native video editing start-up Videotto, clinched the Silver Award in the Pre-employment Training Category at the 2025 POL-ITE Entrepreneurs' Challenge, a national platform that supports aspiring student entrepreneurs.

Videotto uses artificial intelligence to streamline video editing, making content creation more accessible and efficient. The team not only won a $7,000 cash prize, but also secured seed funding from East Ventures to accelerate product development and expand its market reach.

Outstanding Scholars

NP graduates were awarded a range of prestigious scholarships from national agencies including the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), and the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Among the recipients were Financial Informatics* graduate Seo Shin Youn and Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics (CSF) graduate Jason Chua, who received the DSTA Scholarship; while Engineering Science (ES) graduate Alson Jiang was awarded the DSTA Merit Scholarship.

CSF graduate Dominic Lee received the SAF Merit Scholarship. Aerospace Engineering (AEG) graduates Wong Yu Quan and Vyeoz Tan were awarded the SAF Engineering Scholarship, while fellow AEG graduate Peh Yu Peng received the SAF Engineering Academic Scholarship.

AEG graduate Kieran Wong and Information Technology graduate Wu Enjia were both awarded the PSC Scholarship (Engineering) Scholarships.

Distinguished Scholarships

In recognition of their academic excellence and aspirations to create positive change, graduates from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology and School of Health Sciences received scholarships to pursue further studies in healthcare, science, and sustainability.

Biomedical Science (BMS) graduates Khoo Zhen Hua and Peh Kai Yuan, together with Pharmaceutical Science (PHARM) graduate Shivagiri Nathan Jayan, secured scholarships from Nanyang Technological University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

BMS graduates Lucas Chun, Nigel Ong, and Jowenlie Winardy; PHARM graduate Bowen Liew; and Nursing graduates Natasha Tan, Daniel Lalonde, Alicia Jen, and A. Serena Christin clinched scholarships from National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

BMS graduate Ashreefa Norhisham and PHARM graduates Tan Swee En, Ruzenn Goh, and Poong Yoo Min were awarded scholarships to pursue degrees in Pharmacy at NUS. Fellow BMS graduate Khayriya Norhisham and PHARM graduate Wong Wei Bin received scholarships to study Dentistry at NUS.

BMS graduate Jovellano Al Johann Hernandez was awarded the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s National Science Scholarship, while Environmental & Water Technology* graduate Alison Chye secured the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship.

Several graduates also received the Ministry of Health Holdings Healthcare Scholarships. BMS graduates Foong Sin Chen and M. Sreenivaas will pursue further studies at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), while PHARM graduates Gwyneth Sim and Ruzenn Goh will begin their studies at SIT and NUS respectively.

Award-Winning Sustainable Design

Sustainable Design & Engineering* alumnus Muhammad Raihan Syahmi won the ASEAN Furniture Design Award 2025 for his “Heritage 60 Stool” project, a modern interpretation of Singapore’s iconic kopitiam stool.

Raihan’s design embodies a full-cycle sustainable approach, incorporating PEFC-certified timber, eco-friendly materials, and circular design principles to create a furniture piece that is both environmentally responsible and commercially relevant.

After graduating from NP, Raihan pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Design Practice at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore, where he was awarded the President’s Award as the top graduate of his cohort.

Raising Visibility for Invisible Disabilities

NP’s School of Engineering graduates Thaddaeus John Tham and Ryan Leong participated in TomoWork’s Talent Accelerator Programme (TAP), a 12-week initiative that supports graduating polytechnic and Institute of Technical Education students with disabilities in their transition to the workplace.

Thaddaeus and his team developed the “imVISIBLE” pin under TomoWork's Infinity Within campaign to raise awareness of invisible disabilities, including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and partial hearing or vision loss. The campaign was officially launched on Tomo Day 2025, TAP’s annual showcase event.

Ryan contributed an AI-powered dashboard developed using Power BI and Power Automate to help organisations detect production issues early, reduce delays, and improve workflow efficiency.

Filmmakers in the Spotlight

Film, Sound & Video (FSV) alumni Tan Chin Hsien and Jovan Loh received the Jury Prize in the Student Category for “The Recipe” at the 55th Annual USA Film Festival's International Short Film and Video Competition in Dallas, Texas. Produced during their final year at NP under the Honour Film Initiative, the film provides the team’s perspective and interpretation of Honour.

Fellow FSV alumni Yee Shin Mun and Glenda Quek also achieved international recognition when their short film, “Waipo’s Coming Over!”, premiered at the 48th Asian American International Film Festival in New York City – the country’s first and longest-running festival of its kind.

Mass Communication alumni Jake Low and Shaista Dinis saw their production, “Manhole”, selected for the 36th Singapore International Film Festival under the SG Panorama programme. Inspired by everyday encounters, the film explores the concept of conditional help and how responses differ across social classes.

Forty Under 40 Awards UK

NP alumnus Dr Alan Koh was named one of the UK’s Forty Under 40 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science.

A graduate of the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology, Alan has built a strong track record in research and STEM outreach. His work focuses on behavioural science with the use of the microscopic worm Caenorhabditis elegans, as well as bacterial antibiotic resistance and infectious diseases.

He is currently based at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences sited at Imperial College London.

Preserving Culture and Craftsmanship

International Trade & Business alumnus Miguel Bay Hong, founder of Heritage Bay, took home the Silver Award at the 2025 POL-ITE Entrepreneurs' Challenge (Alumni Category). The competition was jointly organised by Action Community for Entrepreneurship, the Institute of Technical Education and local polytechnics, with the support of the Ministry of Education.

Heritage Bay is a cultural retail brand focused on preserving and reinterpreting Southeast Asian craftsmanship for contemporary audiences. Having secured funding from the National Heritage Board and raiSE – which supports businesses that create social impact – Miguel is looking to grow his product line and team.

Innovation Excellence at MOE Innergy Awards

NP received six awards at the MOE Innergy Awards 2025, which recognise innovation in teaching, learning, and workplace practices.

Notably, Mr Zhou Xingding, Senior Lecturer from the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology, received the Outstanding Innovator Award for his contributions to educational innovation.

The Gold Award went to a cross-departmental team from the Digital Services & Technology Office, Finance, and the then Office of Immersion & Careers*. Leveraging AI technologies to enhance productivity and service quality, the team developed solutions for customer enquiries, procurement specification drafting, and student feedback analysis.

Our School of Health Sciences received the Bronze Award for its Mixed Reality initiative, which uses Microsoft HoloLens to enhance nursing education.

Several teams also received Commendation Awards:

• The Lien Ying Chow Library, for incorporating sustainability into NP’s design thinking curriculum through an e-learning course for all Year 1 students, which has since been adopted across all polytechnics.
• The Centre for Environmental Sustainability, for driving digital transformation to improve project visibility, shorten turnaround time, and enhance stakeholder experience, enabling teams to focus on higher-value activities and innovation.
• The then-Office of Immersion & Careers*, for streamlining internship processes, including job selection, company placements, interview notifications, supervisor assignments, assessment, and student surveys.

Debut Feature Film Premieres at Tokyo International Film Festival

School of Film & Media Studies (FMS) Senior Lecturer Mr Michael Kam premiered his debut feature film, “The Old Man and His Car”, at the Tokyo International Film Festival in November 2025.

Starring veteran actor Mr Lim Kay Tong, the film explores themes of ageing and family through the story of a man who sells his beloved car before moving to Canada to live with his son. The screening marked an international milestone for Mr Kam's first feature-length film.

Shining on Screen

Ms Sharon Ismail, then Assistant Director of Student Life & Outreach* at the School of Film & Media Studies (FMS), won the Best Supporting Actress at the Pesta Perdana 2025 awards, Suria’s biennial television awards. This marks her fourth Pesta Perdana win, after previously receiving three Best Actress awards, an achievement that highlights her versatility and continued excellence in the industry.

Daring Tech Designs

NP’s then-Office of Immersion & Careers* Education and Career Guidance coaches received the MOE Divisional-Level Innovation Dare-to-Do Award for their “Design Your Life” AI Chatbot project.

The award recognises the team’s use of artificial intelligence to support student-centric career planning. Through the customised chatbot, students can receive tailored support via targeted prompts and are empowered to thoughtfully reflect on and plan their educational and career pathways.

Singapore 100 Women in Tech Honouree

Director of NP’s Lien Ying Chow Library and Chief Records Officer, Ms Angela Wee, was named one of the Singapore 100 Women in Tech 2025 by the Singapore Computer Society and Infocomm Media Development Authority.

Over a career spanning more than 30 years, she has made significant contributions to Singapore's technology and education sectors. Apart from spearheading the transformation of NP’s Lien Ying Chow Library into an innovative smart learning hub, she was instrumental in establishing the Joint Polytechnic Libraries Collaboration. This collaboration strengthened inter-polytechnic partnerships and enhanced access to learning resources for both students and staff.

President’s Award for Teachers

NP’s School of Business & Accountancy Lecturer Mr Mario Goh was a finalist for the President’s Award for Teachers 2025, a national recognition of excellence in teaching. This accolade acknowledges Mr Goh’s relentless pursuit of pedagogical excellence, and his commitment to advancing impactful and transformative learning that inspire both students and colleagues in the NP community.
