Social Sustainability – Building stronger communities for a better future
Are doing good and doing well mutually exclusive? We don’t think so. At NP, for over two decades, we've committed to driving social impact, shaping a more inclusive and resilient society through education, industry collaboration, research, and practice. Convinced that doing good and doing well can go hand in hand, we work with businesses to build sustainable organisational systems and culture that are inclusive and promote the wellbeing of their stakeholders – while keeping business goals on track.

Campus for Good – Doing Good and Doing Well
Building on the solid foundation of NP’s concerted efforts in making a social impact, we will mark the next chapter with our Campus for Good framework. We will drive social sustainability in the following three focus areas:

Learners for Good
Developing Purpose-Driven Graduates

Industry for Good
Enabling Businesses to Grow Sustainably

Ecosystem for Good
Creating a Campus Ecosystem that Promotes Social Sustainability
Developing Purpose-Driven Graduates
NP will nurture a generation of graduates who have the agency to enact social impact – in school, at work, and in life – while helping the economy thrive sustainably.
1. Social Sustainability in Curriculum
Core to the tenets of social sustainability is the creation of shared value for businesses and the communities they impact. Through projects that bring together corporate and community partners, students gain hands-on experience in shaping plans and implementing programmes that serve the interests of multiple groups.
Project Showcase
Partners: DBS Bank, The Salvation Army
Problem Statement:
How can we promote greater financial inclusion among marginalised communities such as migrant workers to meet their banking needs?
The Solution:
Students from NP’s Banking & Finance course worked with the partners to develop digital marketing strategies that led to an increase in digital engagement and greater access to the bank’s financial services.
"This project taught me about the evolving role of financial institutions in promoting social equity. Addressing the unique challenges of marginalised groups enables organisations like DBS to enhance its brand reputation and demonstrates its commitment to corporate social responsibility."
B VikranDiploma in Banking & Finance, Year 3
Partners: The Ascott Limited, Ludus Lab Pte Ltd
Problem Statement:
How can we cater to the needs of persons with disabilities in the spirit of inclusive hospitality and sustainable tourism?
The Solution:
NP’s Tourism and Resort Management students co-developed wheelchair-accessible Google Map itineraries for 12 hospitality properties to enhance the travel experience for wheelchair users.
"Through this experience, I learnt how to better anticipate diverse needs when using public spaces for events and activities. The differing needs of individuals are opportunities to develop thoughtful design and foster welcoming spaces that reflect our values as a progressive society."
Pearlyn ChongDiploma in Tourism & Resort Management student, Year 3
Partners: Sodexo, Inclus, Michael Page
Problem Statement:
How can we create a welcoming physical and social environment for persons with disabilities (PWDs) at the workplace?
The Solution:
Final-year Community Development students developed a toolkit to guide employers on inclusive employment practices. Entitled "Leading Inclusivity For Tomorrow" (LIFT), the final-year project included a Committee of Practice session to help industry
partners and PWDs better understand each other's challenges.
"LIFT aims to enhance hiring managers’ understanding regarding the development of inclusive workplaces. We’re encouraged to have received positive feedback about our toolkit and seen tangible impact in fostering more inclusive workplace environments."
Gabrille SimDiploma in Community Development*, Class of 2025
(*Renamed Diploma in Psychology & Community Development)
Partner: Tomowork
Problem Statement:
How can we raise greater awareness, visibility and support for people with invisible disabilities — such as ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, and partial hearing or vision loss — in Singapore?
The Solution:
Engineering graduate Thaddaeus helped develop and promote the imVISIBLE Pin, a wearable symbol of solidarity that aims to create awareness. Launched under TomoWork’s Infinity Within ongoing campaign, the pin encourages individuals to self-identify, show support, and spark conversations around invisible disabilities.
"I hope the pin we created will remind those with disabilities that they are not alone... and that they deserve to be seen, heard and respected."

3. Social Impact Scholarship
NP is the first poly to launch this unique scholarship that provides in-depth learning and mentorship opportunities to students passionate about social causes, enabling them to build a strong portfolio for future careers in the “social” pillar of ESG.
Year 2 students taking any course in NP can apply for the Social Impact Scholarship. Apart from final-year tuition fees and a book allowance, students will get to shadow leaders from organisations pioneering social sustainability efforts to understand how businesses are embedding corporate purpose in their long-term strategies.
Enabling Businesses to Grow Sustainably
Focusing on social sustainability makes business sense. Companies that invest in sustainability are more likely to establish a positive reputation and gain the trust of stakeholders. Studies have shown that a growing proportion of customers would pay more for products and services from companies that are committed to making a positive social impact. Businesses that prioritise sustainability also have a strategic advantage in attracting talent.
To help organisations unlock the business value of sustainability, NP has pioneered initiatives and programmes that will empower them to grow by integrating the needs of people and society.
1. Centre for Organisational Resilience and Inclusion
Launched in August 2024, the Centre of Organisational Resilience and Inclusion (CORI) is NP’s pioneering initiative to help organisations thrive in a world impacted by increasing adversity, diversity, and complexity. As the first centre of its kind among Institutes of Higher Learning, CORI offers training, consultancy, and research in human systems – empowering businesses, communities and individuals to build resilient, inclusive, and sustainable teams.
CORI’s programmes are grounded in the emerging field of dialogic Organisational Development. Drawing from disciplines like business, psychology, sociology, and even neuroscience and psychodynamics, CORI provides deeper insights into the complexities of human interactions within systems and organisations.
Whether you're a corporate leader, HR professional, or someone passionate about shaping healthier team cultures, CORI will equip you with the tools to navigate workplace dynamics, foster inclusion, and create positive social impact.

Creating a Campus Ecosystem that Promotes Social Sustainability
NP aims to create a vibrant, purpose-driven ecosystem where community and corporate partners are embedded on campus, enabling students to get up close to the communities they serve.
1. Dialogue in the Dark Singapore
Nestled within the NP campus, Dialogue in the Dark Singapore (DiDsg) is more than just a unique experiential learning centre – it is a powerful platform for social sustainability in action. Through immersive programmes like its Signature Tour in the Dark, Makan in the Dark and Corporate Workshop, DiDsg challenges participants to navigate everyday scenarios without sight, guided by vision-impaired facilitators. These experiences build empathy, sharpen communication, and foster inclusion – skills that are increasingly vital in today’s diverse workplaces and communities.
As part of NP’s social sustainability efforts, DiDsg not only trains and employs the blind as guides and facilitators, but also creates a space where differences dissolve and meaningful conversations emerge. Whether you are an HR professional looking to strengthen team dynamics or an educator seeking impactful learning, DiDsg offers a transformative journey that leaves a lasting impression – long after the lights come back on.
Find out more about DiDsg and its programmes here.
In total darkness, colleagues found the courage to speak up, and leaders discovered the humility to truly listen. That shared vulnerability fostered open communication and authentic collaboration. When the lights returned, many of us came back with a deeper understanding of our teammates' perspectives, challenges, and unseen contributions – returning not just as better leaders, but as more empathetic human beings.

I am now more aware of how we are so blinded by our biases, prejudices and selfish goals that we forget to collaborate and listen.
