369 students received awards at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Scholarship Award Ceremony

A total of 369 students were honoured at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP)’s Scholarship Award Ceremony for their outstanding academic accomplishments and exemplary leadership competencies on 24 November.

Besides the prestigious Ngee Ann Polytechnic Scholarships, donor-supported scholarships, and scholarships presented by external agencies, the ceremony also marked the presentation of NP’s latest award – the Ngee Ann Polytechnic-Industry Alliance (NP-IAS) Scholarship. An exclusive scholarship that is presented in partnership with leaders of industry, the award will open doors to high-impact industry engagement opportunities. Specifically, recipients of the NP-IAS will benefit from mentorship by industry veterans, invitations to closed-door industry events such as networking and dialogue sessions, as well as an internship at the sponsoring organisation.

In his welcome address, Deputy Principal & Registrar Mr Mah Wee Beng said: “Scholars, your future is bright and exciting. Keep growing and seize the many opportunities that NP offers. Take proactive steps to continuously challenge and enrich yourselves.”

All NP scholars get to be part of The Christieara Programme (TCP), NP’s signature talent development programme aimed at nurturing high-performing students to be tomorrow’s leaders. For example, TCP students attended a dialogue session with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the recent Asia Future Summit 2023. Another sought-after programme is the two-week Overseas Merit Fellowship run in partnership with top universities around the world. Focusing on key issues like sustainability, technology and innovation, participants get to broaden their horizons and work on multidisciplinary projects under the guidance of university faculty members.

The Ngee Ann Polytechnic-Industry Alliance Scholarship is an exclusive award that is presented in partnership with leaders of industry, opening doors to high-impact industry engagement opportunities.

Nurturing the Next Generation of Real Estate Talents

Prior to enrolling in NP, See Wei Shan had attended Anderson Serangoon Junior College with the goal of majoring in geography in university, but faced challenges balancing her studies and extracurricular activities. Even when she did not secure a place in the degree programme of her choice, Wei Shan was determined to pursue her passion in geography. She decided to take up NP’s Diploma in Real Estate Business, as she was intrigued by the similarities the programme had with geography, especially in the area of urban planning.

For her exceptional academic achievements, strong leadership qualities and active participation in co-curricular activities, Wei Shan has been awarded the prestigious Mapletree-Ngee Ann Polytechnic Scholarship. Sponsored by prominent real estate development company, Mapletree Singapore, the scholarship was established as part of NP’s efforts to provide high achieving students with impactful industry engagement opportunities that will hone skills and deepen industry connections.

Wei Shan said: “I am grateful and honoured to be awarded this scholarship. I believe it will open doors for me to deepen my understanding about real estate and develop my professional network. I’m confident it will take me one step closer to my goal of pursuing a career in urban planning.”

Second-year Mechanical Engineering (ME) student Wilson Foo Zhi Yang was the first recipient of the Ngee Ann Polytechnic-Grundfos Scholarship.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Engineering Leaders

As a child, the idea of school did not hold much appeal for Wilson Foo Zhi Yang. Instead, his interest lay in the science behind constructing planes and F1 cars, particularly in the realm of aerodynamics. Even as a teenager, he believed the broader application of aerodynamics could play a crucial role in designing fuel-efficient cars that contribute to sustainability. Motivated to pursue his passion, he dedicated himself to his studies in secondary school, and ultimately secured a place in NP’s Diploma in Mechanical Engineering through the Polytechnic Foundation Programme.

Today, he is a recipient of the Ngee Ann Polytechnic-Grundfos Scholarship offered by renowned Danish manufacturer Grundfos, the largest pump maker in the world. The Ngee Ann Polytechnic-Industry Alliance Scholarship offer students like Wilson high-impact developmental opportunities, including mentorship by C-suite executives, job shadowing, and an internship.

Wilson said: “An internship at Grundfos will give me a chance to acquire hands-on experience in testing, designing, and optimising pumps and fluid systems. I look forward to enhancing my understanding of thermofluids engineering, as I find its principles applicable and highly relevant for aerodynamics. Being able to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world projects will further develop my problem-solving skills and ability to create innovative solutions in the future.”
