The course will deepen participants' knowledge and skills of the Medical-Surgical nursing practice. The participants will be equipped with critical, analytical and integrative thinking skills for the application of knowledge and skills in the context of the patients' medical-surgical healthcare needs. The participants will be able to collaborate confidently with the heatlhcare team, patients and their caregiver; improve care outcomes; and have autonomy over the medical-surgical nursing practices.

The graduates of Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing (ADMSN) will be able to work in a wide variety of healthcare settings i.e., from the acute hospitals to community hospitals and nursing homes. The potential positions they can take up include (a) registered nurse specialised in Medical-Surgical nursing; (b) nurse manager; (c) nurse clinician; and (d) nurse educator.

What You Will Learn

You are required to complete 4 post-diploma certificates within a two-year validity period to be awarded the Advanced Diploma qualification.

Applied Sciences in Advanced Nursing

The certificate equips the students with comprehensive knowledge and skills required for better understanding of individual patient journey across setting-based and population-based health care. The modules covered are Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making, Applied Pathophysiology and Pharmacology, Evidence-Based Practice, and Care Management across Life Span. The modules aim to develop the students to be more adapt at managing the complexity of patients related to ageing, common acute and chronic diseases, common psychosocial issues and preventive care.

Clinical Practicum in Advanced Nursing

The certificate provides students with learning opportunities to apply and synthesize the knowledge and practical skills they learnt in the Post-Diploma Certificate 1 (Post-Diploma Certificate in Applied Sciences in Advanced Nursing) when they provide care to the patients, and support to their families in a 2-week cross-training clinical postings.

Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing

The certificate equips students with comprehensive knowledge and skills specifically required for the care of patients with medical and/or surgical disorders/ conditions. The modules covered include Fundamentals in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing Science I, Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing Sciene II, and Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing Practice. The students will learn the medicla-surgical management of patients based on the organ system-based alterations.

Advanced Clinical Practicum in Medical-Surgical Nursing

The certifiate equips students with learning opportunities in medical and surgical clinical settings during a 9-week clinical postings. The students will apply the knowledge and skills they learnt in Post-Diploma Certificate 3 (Post-Diploma Certificate in Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing) when they provide care to the patients, and support their families or significant others.

Entry Requirements

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are invited to apply for the course:

  • A local Polytechnic Diploma / Degree in Health Sciences ( Nursing) or equivalent

  • Be a Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practising certificate from the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB);

  •  Have at least 2 years of clinical practice; and

    •  Have a minimum of 1 year practice in the nursing speciality - nursing related to medical-surgical nursing
