Maths Challenge

The Future Starts Here

The flagship Maths Challenge typically involves hundreds of students across thirty secondary schools participating in a zesty series of challenging Mathematics and Science quests at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. This annual event is jointly organized by the School of Engineering and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Maths Challenge comprises of individual mind-boggling questions  scaffolded  within team games designed to enthuse students’ curiosity and interest in Mathematics and Science. In the vitalising Alpha Blast segment, teams engage their thinking prowess to solve Mathematics, Engineering & Science puzzles.

Winning teams typically display lightning fast responses, albeit without calculators, based on accurate problem-solving skills. Omega Escape features dynamic teams decrypting sequentially challenging ‘C’s involving clues and codes   - all within a dark room while racing against time.

A student of Singapore Chinese Girls' School, Clara Ng, found the Omega Escape game to be "very fun which got our adrenaline pumping as teams must think quickly to solve math problems and race against time to escape".

Ong Min Li, a student of Chua Chu Kang Secondary, found the quiz questions on Velocity & Acceleration topics to be challenging and that Maths Challenge inspired her to delve further into the exploration of Physics.

A Math teacher of CHIJ Saint Joseph Convent, Ms Clarissa Yap, commented that "students enjoyed the Maths Challenge as it involved hands-on experiential gameplay to solve mathematical puzzles. The quizzes involving collaborative and competitive multi-tasking are beneficial and enjoyable for students."

Student of East Spring Secondary, Ghazi Emir Samari marvelled that "the interesting quizzes enabled us to apply our understanding of mathematical concepts across various scenarios usually not found in textbooks."

Student Tristen Tham from Nan Chiau High School felt that the event pulled on their ability in critical problem solving, and that it tested their adaptability on time-sensitive problems. His teacher, Mr Suresh, felt that the exposure was good for his students who are aiming to enroll in a polytechnic, especially so for those who already knew which course that they are targetting.

The programme concludes with a prize-giving ceremony where trophies are presented to dynamic winning teams based on cumulative high scores. Do come by to join in their zest for quests!
