The flagship Maths Challenge typically involves about 670 students across thirty secondary schools participating in a zesty series of challenging Mathematics and Science quests at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. This annual event is jointly organized by the School of Engineering and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Maths Challenge comprises individual mindboggling quizzes scaffolded with team games designed to enthuse students’ curiosity and interest in Mathematics and Science. In the vitalizing Alpha Blast segment, teams engage their thinking prowess to solve Mathematics, Engineering & Science puzzles.

Winning teams typically display lightning fast responses, albeit without calculators, based on accurate problem-solving skills. Omega Escape features dynamic teams decrypting sequentially challenging ‘C’s involving clues and codes- all within a dark room while racing against time.

Student Tai Jin Xun from Fajar Secondary found that Omega Escape codes are ‘challenging to decipher but it’s exciting to solve clues in the dark’. Fellow schoolmate Yeo Jun Rui said students ‘feel a good sense of accomplishment’ for being fast and accurate in Alpha Blast. A Maths teacher from East View Secondary, Ms Mindy Yue, finds Maths Challenge to be a refreshing platform which facilitates students to solve Maths & Science questions using out-of-the-box strategies.

Student Sean Seow from Serangoon Garden Secondary elaborated that the games ‘require them to work as a team and that they test their communication skills to get their ideas across one another’. Another student Gabriel Lim from Hong Kah Secondary said that ‘overall it was challenging but fun’.

Ms Lim, a teacher at Serangoon Garden Secondary observed that while her students came from different classes, they displayed the ability to work well together. She also felt that Maths Challenge allowed her students to gain some perspective of a polytechnic while having fun.

The programme concludes with a prize-giving where trophies are presented to dynamic winning teams based on cumulative high scores. Do come by to join in their zest for quests!
