The School of IS offers Basic Mandarin modules (BM101, BM102, BM103) for beginners who have no knowledge of the Chinese language. While also offering a Business Mandarin module (BIZM) for students who already have 'O' level Mandarin understanding.

​Basic Mandarin Modules (BM101, BM102, BM103) In these modules, students are exposed to basic Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, Chinese characters and simple conversations. Four language skills are introduced while emphasis is laid on listening, speaking and reading. Students will gain a good understanding of Hanyu Pinyin (Chinese phonetic system) and be able to carry out​ simple conversations, such as greetings, counting numbers, enquiring dates, introducing family members, giving a self-introduction, striking up conversations with Chinese speakers and recognise simple Chinese characters.


Business Mandarin Module (BIZM) This module will provide an increased knowledge of China – its business etiquette, phrases and terminology –  to the students. The module allows students to have a better understanding of the cultural context in business settings and develop skills on how to carry out business functions in Mandarin and in China. The module equips students with an increased knowledge of China – an understanding of the cultural context and the ability to communicate effectively in Mandarin in China business settings. Students will gain an understanding of China business etiquette, phrases and terminology; and will be instructed on how to carry out business functions in Mandarin, including crafting of emails and formal correspondences.
