Thirty students from Accountancy and Business Studies attended a three-week Overseas Immersion Programme to Chongqing University in China. During the trip, they learned about Chinese history, culture, education, lifestyles and political systems through lessons at their host institution. Students gained deeper insight into China’s social and business practices during their industry, community and cultural visits. They also went for a three-day trip to Chengdu and Wulong, where they visited the Chengdu Panda Research and Breeding Base, the Three Natural Bridges in Wulong Karst and watched a live performance of Zhang Yimou’s production, Impressions Sanjie Liu.
“The PolyFinTech100 API Hackathon was a very meaningful learning opportunity. I learnt how computers can recognise an image and how a simple chatbot can be created using publicly available trained AI agents. Going through brainstorming, prototyping, and finally pitching my ideas to a wide audience were challenging and invaluable experiences for me.”* Now renamed the Diploma in Banking & Finance.
“Working with external organisations like NKF showed us how real-world companies handle large scale campaigns. Unlike the relatively sheltered environment of the classroom, we were exposed to situations that required us to think on our feet and make decisions.”
“Health X Heritage”, “Yuhua Through Time”, and “That 70’s Life” were events conceptualised and executed by Year 2 Tourism & Resort Management students for the integrated project in their Conventions & Events Management and Service-Learning in Action modules. They partnered the merchants’ associations in Hong Kah, Tanjong Pagar and Yuhua communities to create vibrant community spaces, by adopting different themes for learning and bonding. The integrated project gave students real-world opportunities to oversee an entire event, from inception to execution.
Students from Internatonal Trade & Business visited startup companies and learned more about their business operations during an industry visit to Vietnam. Through interactions with the startup business owners, students gained greater insights into their motivations and found out what it takes to develop a creative idea into a feasible business venture. They also experienced how the companies are adapting and innovating in the areas of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
“My 6-month internship with PwC Singapore was the highlight of my time in BA. I could apply content learnt in the classroom and interact with experienced accounting professionals. These gave me valuable insights into the profession. NP also offered numerous opportunities for global exposure. I worked on a community service project in Vietnam, attended a course trip to Batam and took part in a study mission trip to the Philippines.”
“I was given a lot of autonomy to develop my skill sets in BA through special interest groups. I also spent several weeks in Shanghai and California during study trips and these experiences exposed me to different cultures and broadened my interest in various topics. It showed me that the world is fascinating and there are many paths that one can take to derive satisfaction.”

“The BS diploma lays out the foundation you need as an entrepreneur. I honestly did not appreciate how useful the modules were until I started running Secretlab. I was able to apply the accounting, marketing, business IT and communications skills that I learned in school in a real-world business setting.”
“The modules I took such as Tourism Law and Accounting & Finance gave me a strong foundation when I entered SMU. Through presentations and active participation in class, I have become a more effective communicator – that helped me to perform well for scholarship interviews and the professional world.”
“NP’s strong industry connections provided me with industry exposure. I saw how there is a strong link between theory and real-world practice. Through the Industry Mentors’ Network programme, I was attached to an industry mentor who allowed me to sit in her meetings with suppliers. I was able to experience first-hand how business negotiations took place in real life, and gained a more in-depth understanding of the industry.”* The Diploma in International Logistics & Supply Chain Management has been merged with the Diploma in International Business to form the Diploma in International Trade & Business.
