Teaching & Learning Centre - Mobile e-Learning Framework
In 1998, TLC was made responsible for leading NP’s Teaching & Learning environment into the 21st Century. The roadmap included
- Transforming the campus into a fully wireless environment.
- Equipping each student with personal electronic devices.
- Enabling and managing learning through an e-learning system.
Today, NP’s mobile e-learning Framework are still supported by these three pillars:
A fully wireless enabled campus which allows for anywhere-anytime access to the e-environment.
A student body that is equipped with personally-owned laptops or PDAs as appropriate.
A campus-wide e-Learning platform which supports and enables learners to access module information and services, interact, collaborate, and construct and present knowledge. The Platform currently in use is Blackboard.
Mobile e-Learning is seen as a critical enabler for NP to offer a 21st Century learner-centered experience.
TLC continues to review the Mobile e-Learning Framework and NP’s e-learning design and practice to ensure that our blended learning experience remains current, engaging, and able to shape the e-habits and –fluencies that will give our graduates a professional edge.
Examples of TLC’s ongoing review activities:
1. Software for Student Notebooks
Access to appropriate software is integral to providing an engaging and effective e-learning experience.NP provides students with all the software required for their particular courses. Relevant software is installed in their laptops.
By ensuring that all students have the necessary software needed for their courses, NP students are empowered to take greater charge of their own learning, and are able to use their notebooks during and as well as outside their time-tabled classes.
2. Open Module Content Viewing
NP believes in Open Sharing & Learning and therefore opens up all its modules residing in its online Learning System (Blackboard) for open viewing by all NP full-time students and staff.
The open viewing feature is supported by a Full-Text Search Engine integrated into our online Learning System.
Specifically, the open viewing feature aims to encourage NP students to make more informed choices on your module selection. For academic staff, the open viewing feature represents their openness to peer sharing and learning, and encouraging the adoption of Best Practice in Teaching & Learning.
3. Nurturing Respect for Intellectual Property
NP promotes and practices Respect for Intellectual Right by putting in place a strong Plagiarism Policy and has implemented Plagiarism Detection software.
But importantly, by adopting a clear stand against Plagiarism and with students knowing that their assignment works are inspected by the plagiarism detection software, NP Learning environment is one that systematically nurtures a respect Intellectual Property.
TLC also leads in shaping and planning for next generation e-learning for NP. More detail will be given in due course.
