Enrichment Programmes

As part of outreach to Ngee Ann's community, we wish to engage Grandparents of our Students with some purposeful and enriching programmes. With practicality in mind, we have workshops based on Health, Social & Recreational and Current Technology. ALL WORKSHOPS will commence only in the new semester April - August 2013.

*A $5 workshop fee is applicable for each participant each workshop. Payment to be made on the day of the workshop.

    • Seeing Beyond Silver Lining – Eye Diseases and Its Impact on You

      Seeing Beyond Silver Lining – Eye Diseases and Your Health A healthy pair of eyes is the window to our beautiful world. However, various chronic diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can have a devastating impact on our eye health. At this workshop, you will learn how these health conditions affect the vision, how to detect them early, prevention and proper management techniques so that you can better enjoy the sights this beautiful world has to offer. Participants will also learn to do self-monitoring tests, and pick up tips on how to identify symptoms that affect the eyes as a result of these health problems.

      Participants will get to enjoy an eye screening after the workshop. This is by appointment only.

      Body Changes & Nutrition Good nutrition is essential to ageing well. Healthy eating provides essential energy and nutrients for your general wellbeing. It also helps to maintain your health and prevent certain chronic diseases. The workshop will walk you through the various changes your body undergoes as you age, and how they can affect your nutritional needs.

    • Strengthening Core Muscles to Stay Active

      Strengthening Core Muscles to Stay Active Get off the couch and work your muscles at this workshop, which will provide you with an understanding of the various core muscles that are important to maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle, and the exercises to strengthen them. Strengthening core muscles can enhance work performance, family interaction and improve overall balance, as well as prevent injuries such as back injuries. The trainer will discuss basic nutritional needs, and touch on core muscle exercises and the type of age-appropriate exercise programmes that are suitable for you.

      Indoor Gardening & Landscaping Indoor gardening and landscaping is also known as "Interiorscaping". In this workshop, you will learn how to use materials such as furniture, stones or water features, combine them with the right kind of plants and herbs, to beautify the interior space. You will also learn how to keep the plants healthy, manage pests, and make your "Interiorscaping" project functional and beautiful.
      Participants have to pay a $10 course material fee to the trainer.

    • Beautify your Gardens with Herbs

      Herbs Gardening for Beginners Herbs are plants valued for their flavour, scent or medicinal properties. They are also used for culinary, medicinal and emotional purposes. In this workshop, you will learn simple ways to grow, harvest, store as well as handle fresh and dried herbs safely in your homes. You will also learn about the similarities and differences between the Chinese, Indian and Malay traditional medicinal herbs. Participants have to pay a $10 course material fee to the trainer.

In this workshop, you will learn about the common Internet services such as Facebook, Twitter and Skype that are used to help people communicate, and how to use them effectively, including posting your thoughts, chatting online, sharing photos and playing games with friends online.

      Digital Photography - Editing & Sharing Family Photos Photographs create lasting memories of the good times you share with your loved ones. Learn to develop a portfolio you can be proud of at this workshop, where you can pick up tips on creating and sharing digital photos and images with your family and friends. The workshop will also help you develop the necessary technical, visual and creative skills. In this course, you will learn how to:
      • Download photographs to the computer
      • Download and install Picasa, a free photo editing software from Google
      • Manage and share your digital photographs using Picasa
      • Enhance photo via Picasa
      • Edit and enhance video clips

      What is Internet? What can the Internet Do for You? The way people communicate has changed vastly over the years, thanks to the Internet which connects people, information and resources around the world all in one click.

      This workshop aims to guide you to use the Internet effectively. You will learn how to connect to the Internet, browse Web pages, navigate Websites, use search engines to search for resources on the Internet and exchange e-mail with others.

      This is a practice-oriented workshop, hence do expect plenty of hands-on activities.
