Congrats to Chen Yihang & Gong Yi Lin, beating all other tertiary teams to emerge tops, winning the much-coveted 2nd prize award of $6,000 (there being no 1st prize winner this year)!
What is the project all about?
This project aims to build a prototype “green power socket” that will create awareness to the users the energy consumption of any electrical appliances, for usage control, monitoring and restraint purposes. All power socket usage monitoring and control are done wirelessly via a PC using the ZigBee protocol. Users can access the usage data, which includes the amount of energy consumed, duration and total cost of usage (in dollars and cents). Users can even control the sockets remotely via a notebook, an iPad or a smartphone over the internet.
What is the new idea in this project?
This project can provide real-time energy usage cost to users instead of the normal month-end billing. It offers the users easy access to and control of his/her electrical appliances anytime and from anywhere. In addition, it creates awareness to indulgent users of the energy used by their appliances, and encourages users to restrain from over consumption.
