Diploma in Marine & Offshore Technology (N42)

Giving you that something xtra
  • The only naval architecture diploma course in Singapore for design and construction of oil rigs and ships

  • Strong links with key industry players like the Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI), Keppel Corporation Ltd, Sembcorp Industries Ltd and Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd

  • Scholarships available, including ASMI Scholarship valued at S$10,000 annually over three years

  • Tie-up with Newcastle University for a degree programme in Naval Architecture, for advanced standing and subsidised fees

About the Diploma

Do you have fond memories of building toy ships and oil rigs with Legos? Or do you dream of designing a revolutionary, streamlined ship’s hull that greatly reduces water resistance? Now, you can realise your dreams in the maritime industry with the Diploma in Marine & Offshore Technology (MOT)!

Experience a curriculum that focuses on the three main sectors of the maritime industry – ship design and production, ship conversion and offshore technology. You can even specialise in ship design, picking up the skills to assist in the design and construction of marine vessels, oil rigs and semi-submersibles. Alternatively, learn to deal with the equipment and processes required to transport oil and gas underwater to the shuttle tanker with the oil and gas specialisation option.

High-tech facilities on campus allow you to design and build your ship models and test them in Singapore’s only towing tank. You will also benefit from MOT’s close relationship with the industry, especially the ASMI. Frequent study trips and  internships – both local and overseas – ensure that you have industry exposure right from the start.

Unique to MOT is the availability of many scholarships. You can vie for the MOT-ASMI scholarship, KC Lee scholarships and Keppel Offshore & Marine scholarships, just to name a few.  So are you ready to captain the marine industry?

Career Prospects

The shipyards in Singapore command a niche market in the design and construction of customised ships for the world. Singapore is also the world leader in ship conversion, and rig construction for offshore oil exploration. A recent survey showed that there were more than 100,000 maritime workers in Singapore. On average, each enjoyed several months bonus. Past MOT students were offered two to three jobs even before graduation.

You can look forward to quickly landing a job and enjoy an attractive pay package. Find employment in the designing, construction, marketing, purchasing, and testing of marine vessels, oil rigs and semi-submersibles.  You need not sail on board ships as seafarers.

Further Studies

You will have the opportunity to pursue a 2-year degree programme in Naval Architecture offered by Newcastle University (UK). The programme, a tie-up between Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Newcastle University, is conducted in Singapore, at Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s campus. Since this programme is heavily subsidised by the Ministry of Education of Singapore, you will enjoy affordable fees of about $7,100 per year if you are a Singapore citizen.

Alternatively, you can also gain advanced standing from many local and overseas universities in engineering degree programmes in marine engineering, marine technology, naval architecture, offshore engineering, small craft technology, mechanical engineering, and so on. Here are some examples:

  • Nanyang Technological University
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Engineering

  • National University of Singapore
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

  • Newcastle University, United Kingdom
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Naval Architecture

  • Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, United Kingdom
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

  • University of Sydney, Australia
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering

  • Australian Maritime College, Australia
    • Bachelor of Engineering in Naval Architecture or Ocean Engineering or Marine & Offshore Systems

Here are more details on the degree options and advanced standing at the universities - locally and overseas.

^  Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) modules at Ngee Ann help students become more versatile and competitive by expanding their knowledge and skills beyond their core disciplines. Areas covered include communication, entrepreneurship, lifeskills, media and the arts, and science and technology.

Diploma Plus Programme and Elective Modules

To complete the diploma, students have to take two elective modules and they can choose these from the engineering and non-engineering clusters. To qualify for a Diploma Plus Certificate, students just need to complete a total of four elective modules, with three from the same cluster. The Diploma Plus will better prepare students for university education and widen their career opportunities.
