 An Aid for Visually-handicapped

Final year students in ECE are required to undergo a module, Project Design. It provides students with practical experience in the design and implementation of a project to demonstrate their engineering and presentation skills, and knowledge gained in the various academic subjects

One notable project was done by Soon Hock Wei and Sherlyn Poh. They both studied in the BME Course. Their project, entitled ‘Public Transport Aids for Visually Handicapped – A Private Announcement System’ was designed to assist the visually-handicapped commute by bus.

The visually-handicapped usually rely on people around them to board the correct bus or to alight at their desired stop. However, they are still prone to making mistakes, hence boarding the wrong bus or alighting at the wrong stop. With an aim to help them overcome this problem, the project was developed.

The system, consisting of a touch screen LCD on a PDA, an audio
transmitter and an FM receiver, is easy to use. All the driver
needs to do is to press a button on the PDA when the bus
reaches a bus stop and the system will transmit a voice message
over the 96 MHz bandwidth. The visually-handicapped will then
be able to hear it on the FM receiver and decide whether or not
to alight.
