 Diploma in Biomedical Engineering (N60)

Giving you that something xtra

  • The pioneer diploma course in Singapore that bridges engineering with the life sciences

  • Lessons are delivered by specialist staff from the Schools of Engineering and Life Sciences & Chemical Technology who have achieved product patents and performed world-class research and development work

  • Six-month internships at hospitals, multi-national corporations, research institutes or universities

  • A high 65% of 2007 BME graduates secured places in local and overseas universities immediately after graduation

About the Diploma

Biomedical engineering has resulted in many medical miracles such as regaining movement of limbs, extending life, and supporting the functions of the human body. If you are fascinated by such medical breakthroughs, then the Diploma in Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the course for you. It will give you an insight into both life sciences and engineering that lead to the development of practical and innovative medical equipment and procedures.

You will be equipped with a strong foundation in engineering that complements the life sciences, including areas such as electronics, biophysics, medical instrumentation, cell and molecular biology, biomechanics and implants. Learn to track research in technologies that are yielding new ways to eradicate diseases and raise the standard of healthcare. You will be able to anticipate, understand and contribute to the development of more effective medical equipment and treatments.

So, are you ready to become a competent biomedical engineer who unlocks and sustains the rapid development of Singapore’s heavily-invested life sciences industry with BME?

Career Prospects

In Singapore, the fast growing Biomedical Engineering segment accounts for more than half of all personnel employed in the biomedical services industry. Jobs abound with healthcare service providers like hospitals and medical centres, as well as suppliers of medical equipment. You will be much sought after by the industry in the areas of servicing, maintaining and developing specialised medical devices. Depending on their job scope, they could also cover fields like research, design and development.

Accreditation for Further Studies

BME’s diverse, multidisciplinary and yet in-depth curriculum will allow you to pursue an array of undergraduate courses at local and overseas universities. BME graduates have gone on to pursue biological science, physics & applied physics, computer engineering, electrical & electronic engineering and even business degrees amongst others at Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore. For example, BME graduates have enrolled in the following undergraduate courses:

  • Nanyang Technological University
o Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
    o Bachelor of Engineering (Bioengineering)
o Bachelor of Engineering (Materials Engineering) with honours
  • National University of Singapore
o Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering
    o Bachelor of Engineering (Bioengineering)

You can also gain credit exemptions from the following overseas universities:

  •  King’s College London, United Kingdom
o Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science)

  •  The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom
o Bachelor of Engineering (Biomaterial Science & Tissue Engineering)
o Master of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering)

  •  University of New South Wales, Australia
o Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering
o Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

  •  Queensland University of Technology, Australia
    o Bachelor of Engineering (Medical)

Here are more details on the degree options and advanced standing at the universities - locally and overseas.

The aggregate computation for selection is based on grades obtained for English, Mathematics, Science or Design & Technology or Computer Studies and two other subjects.

** Candidates with English as a second language must have attained a minimum grade of 6.

Candidates with severe vision deficiency should not apply for the course. Those with colour appreciation deficiency may be considered, subject to an in-house test.

First-Year ModulesSecond-Year ModulesFinal-Year Modules
^  Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) modules at Ngee Ann help students become more versatile and competitive by expanding their knowledge and skills beyond their core disciplines. Areas covered include communication, entrepreneurship, lifeskills, media and the arts, and science and technology.

Diploma Plus Programme and Elective Modules

To complete the diploma, students have to take two elective modules and they can choose these from the engineering and non-engineering clusters. To qualify for a Diploma Plus Certificate, students just need to complete a total of four elective modules, with three from the same cluster. The Diploma Plus will better prepare students for university education and widen their career opportunities.

Engineering ClustersNon-engineering Clusters
*  Designed in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). The syllabus is based on the first-year engineering mathematics and science curricula of NUS.

Engineering students can also pursue Diploma Plus Certificates in Business, Innovation & Enterprise, and Foreign Languages, which are offered by other academic schools in Ngee Ann.
