About the Diploma

Your home, the malls you shop in and the bridges you use all exist because of civil engineering. Design, plan and supervise the construction of these structures with the Diploma in Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE).

Benefit from a curriculum that has a good balance of civil and environmental modules. You will receive comprehensive training in the intricacies of building analysis and design, as well as water and wastewater treatment, pollution control, waste management and recycling, and environmental health management.

You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to plan, design, operate and manage structures in an environmentally sustainable manner. You will be able to enhance the engineering field without damaging our environment. You can even receive additional certification as a Resident Technical Officers by the Building and Construction Authority, an Environmental Control Officer by the National Environment Agency and a Noise Monitoring Officer by the Ministry of Manpower.

Career Prospects

As a civil engineer, you will give foreign investment and economic development a boost, by creating good and environmentally friendly infrastructure. Equipped with broad-based and dual-disciplined knowledge and skills, you will be well-placed for careers in both the public and private sectors. You will be well sought after by government agencies like the Land Transport Authority, Building and Construction Authority, National Environment Agency, Public Utilities Board, National Parks Board, and Ministry of Defence.

You may take up careers as civil/structural designers, project supervisors, assistant environmental engineers, project engineers, environmental technologists, assistant biodiversity officers, officers overseeing environmental health, safety and control, laboratory analysts, research assistants, and marketing executives.

 
Further Studies   

If you want to further your studies in civil engineering, you can receive one to two years’ exemptions or module exemptions in both local and overseas universities.

For example, you will qualify for one year’s advanced standing when you apply for the degree in civil or environmental engineering at Nanyang Technological University or National University of Singapore. Australian and United Kingdom universities, such as the University of Queensland, Bond University and the University of Newcastle may offer up to two years’ advanced standing.

Entry Requirements  

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must have the following GCE ‘O’ Level examination (or equivalent) results and fulfil the aggregate computation requirements.

Subject
‘O’ Level Grade
English 1-7 **
Mathematics (Elementary/Additional) 1-6
Science (with Physics or Chemistry or Biology component) or Design & Technology or Computer Studies 1-6

The aggregate computation for selection is based on grades obtained for English, Mathematics, Science or Design & Technology or Computer Studies and two other subjects.

** Candidates with English as a second language must have attained a minimum grade of 6.

Candidates with hearing deficiency should not apply for the course.

^  Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) modules at Ngee Ann help students become more versatile and competitive by expanding their knowledge and skills beyond their core disciplines. Areas covered include communication, entrepreneurship, lifeskills, media and the arts, and science and technology.


 Diploma Plus Programme and Elective Modules


To complete the diploma, students have to take two elective modules and they can choose these from the engineering and non-engineering clusters. To qualify for a Diploma Plus Certificate, students just need to complete a total of four elective modules, with three from the same cluster. The Diploma Plus will better prepare students for university education and widen their career opportunities.

*  Designed in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). The syllabus is based on the first-year engineering mathematics and science curricula of NUS.


Engineering students can also pursue Diploma Plus Certificates in Business, Innovation & Enterprise, and Foreign Languages, which are offered by other academic schools in Ngee Ann.
