ROBOCOACH EXERCISE WITH THE ELDERLY
JANUARY - DECEMBER
Page Sub Content
Hello, Ah Ma! I am Xuan, your Fitness RoboCoach.
Named after one of her creators, Electrical Engineering student Lim Pei Xuan, the robot has a rosy red face, blue eyes and two teeth, and mimics human movements. Xuan has a regular job as RoboCoach, the personal fitness coach of senior citizens who frequent the Lions Befrienders Senior Activity Centre in Mei Ling Street.
Xuan takes her responsibilities very seriously and coaches the elderly in performing 15 types of arm exercise each week. She can recognise the human voice instructing her to start off the exercise routine. She slows down the pace during group workouts to make sure everyone can catch up. Xuan can also guide individuals during personalised exercise routines and gently corrects the individual, such as to raise the arms higher.
Electrical Engineering Division of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Engineering has adopted the Lions Befriender Senior Activity Centre in 2015 as part of its SG50 community outreach through technology. Staff and students take turns to join the fitness RoboCoach at the Senior Activity Centre every Monday morning.
