 Success Stories

Ngee Ann graduates Ron Ng Chong Sheng (BLT 2007) and Soong Junwei (BIO 2007) recently became the first students in Singapore to be accepted into our local medical school directly from polytechnic. To date, 9 graduates from Ngee Ann Polytechnic's life science courses (Molecular Biotechnology, Biomedical Science and Biomedical Laboratory Technology) have been accepted into medical programmes in Singapore and overseas universities.

Ron (formerly from Outram Secondary School) and Junwei (formerly from Fuhua Secondary School) were the only two polytechnic graduates, among 250 aspiring doctors, to be accepted by the National University of Singaporeans (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

It was no easy task for the duo. Apart from being assessed on their polytechnic results and "O" level grades, they also had to vie with graduates from junior colleges through two rounds of interviews and an essay test.

"I knew the chances of poly students entering this course were slim, so I pushed myself to work even harder", said Ron who studied Biomedical Laboratory Technology at NP, while Junwei took up Biotechnology.

As a coincidence, Ron was the 2007 Silver Medalist for the Diploma in Biomedical Laboratory Technology while Junwei was the Silver Medalist for the Diploma in Biotechnology. Ron was in the NP Life Guard Corp while Junwei was mad about dragon-boating. Must be something to do with water.

Dr Sushila Chang, then director of NP's School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology (LSCT), said the School's broad-based and in-depth education had required students to do a lot of team work and many research projects which are essential skills in medicine.

We are very proud of all our graduates who play such important roles in industry and research.

Other LSCT graduates also in the field of medicine include:

  • Kwan Mei Wai (BIO 2004) - currently  pursuing Medicine at  University of Texas)
  • Moses Lok (BIO 2002) - currently pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Western Australia
  • Dr. Ian Tang (BIO - MLT Option1993) - Graduated from University of Sydney in 2005 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
  • Jesmine Lee (BMS 2001) - currently pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the National University of Singapore.
  • Penny Tan Yi Hui (BMS 2005) - currently pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at UK's University of Leicester
