The School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, wishes to invite your school to participate in our Sunflower Festival 2011 on 16th of July 2011.

What is the Sunflower Festival 2011?   

The flower festival is the growing of sunflower plants in a pot with the aim of introducing students to the science and art of growing quality plants. In addition, in the course of the 10-week growth period, students will experience and appreciate the value of their scientific work while observing the growth and development of their plants.    

Through the process of growing plants, your students will develop skills and knowledge of

• plant biology and characteristics
• plant growth requirements
• plant disease
• plant maintenance.

Who can participate and what is the programme?
 
The Sunflower Festival 2011 is open to all secondary pupils from secondary 1 to those undertaking their O and N levels.

Timeline

The timeline for the competition is as follows:

7th April at 3:30 pm in Ngee Ann Polytechnic,    
Lecture theater 28
There will be a 1-hour preparatory workshop on the intricacies of growing champion potted flowering sunflower plants. The required pot and seeds for growing plants will be provided.  Although, attendance at the workshop will be useful for the students, it is not a prerequisite for their participation in the competition. If your students are unable to attend the workshop, arrangements can be made for you to collect the pot and seeds from us on a later date
 

 April - July 2011
Students grow and maintain their potted plants. If your students need guidance during this period, please do not hesitate to contact us. 

16th July between 8:30am - 12:30pm @LT28 in Ngee Ann Polytechnic 

Judging 8:30am - 10.30am

- Students will exhibit their potted plants and poster of the growth chart for judging from 8:30am to 10:30am.
- Students (all team members) must be present at the time of judging.
- Students to be prepared to answer questions at the time of judging. 

Seminar & Presentation of Certificates 11:00am - 12.30pm

- Students will attend a talk on Landscape Design and Horticulture before announcement of winners.
- Refreshments will be served. All Potted plants and posters will be on display.  

Awards

Prizes will be awarded to the top entries as follows:
   
First Prize           S$ 400  
Second Prize      S$ 200  
Third Prize          S$ 100  
Three Consolation prizes S$ 50 (each)
