Since its inception, this Service Learning Trip to Batam Orphanages has been running for 3 years consecutively from 2010 to 2012. The trip consist of a half day teambuilding program followed by 3 days of service learning work at 2 orphanages and finally a half day of rest and recreation activities.This 5 day trip has been proven to be very successful and popular among LSCT students and staffs and applications have been increasing each year. There were 95 student applicants this year but only 47 students finally got to go for the trip.Prior to the trip, in Dec 2011, students of LSCT CSIG (Community Service Interest Group) staged a 2 day Charity Bazaar at LSCT foyer. Students actively sold creative stuffs and raised a total of $2, 607. The money were used to buy materials for the projects to be implemented during the Service Learning Trip at the two orphanages. In addition, Rebecca (Pharm Sc Yr 1) made an outright donation to the Orphanages, and another student, Siu Yi (VBS) bought shoes for all the orphans in the orphanage.The various projects implemented by the students at the two orphanages include Orphanage 1 (with about 37 children aged between 4-16 years) a) Purchasing and installing a water pumpb) Drawing and painting murals in the Shelter Home c) Teaching Arts & Crafts d) Teaching Englishe) Assembling a First Aid Kit and rendering first aid for minor cuts and wounds. Teaching Shelter Home how to use the medications in the First Aid Kitf) Purchasing vitamins for the Homeg) Teaching Health & Hygiene and delicing the orphans h) Birthday celebrations with a big birthday cake, food and gifts for the children Orphanage 2 also with about 37 children aged between 6- 16 yearsa) Purchasing & painting the kitchen and hall of the Shelter Homeb) Purchasing 2 guitars for the musically inclined childrenc) All (c) – (h) projects done at Orphanage 1 were also carried out at Orphanage 2d) Repair & renovation work done for the orphanage – doors, ceilings, kitchen, lightings.e) Purchase and present table, chairs, mattresses, basic food stuffs for the children A total of 47 students and 4 staffs from the 7 LSCT Diploma Courses went on the 2012 trip. Four student leaders and several project student leaders helped to implement projects during the trip.On the final night, NP students staged a Cultural Show where students came in national costumes from different Asian Countries. Students have fun appreciating Arts and Culture through fashion, performances and games. Several projects were completed in the 5 days trip to the delight of the orphanages.
