Diploma in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (N56)

Giving you that something Xtra

  • A unique diploma that combines biological and chemical sciences with chemical technology

  • Versatile curriculum with environmental and science components offer graduates and extra edge

  • Internationally recognised and the first diploma course to be fully accredited by the Institute of Chemical Engineers, UK

  • Research Track for students with interest in a research-based career

  • Pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering with the University of Newcastle right here on Ngee Ann's campus

About the Diploma

We know that crude oil and other petrochemicals are hugely valuable raw materials. But did you know that they can be turned into everyday products such as polymers, clothing and gadgets?

This Diploma in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (CBE), which integrates biological and chemical sciences with engineering concepts, is the only course of its kind to show you how to make this happen.

Covering diverse areas such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, engineering and environmental science, CBE offers you wide career options. And if you opt for the Pharma & Biopharmaceutical specialisation in your final year, you will be able to easily launch a career in the booming biopharmaceutical industry upon graduation.

In your final year, you can choose to go on a six-week practical training stint at the Chemical Process Technology Centre in Jurong Island. Alternatively, you can choose to undertake the research track which will introduce you to research concepts and methods.

Following that, all CBE students will get to go on a 16-week local or overseas internship with companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline.

Career Prospects

You can join a wide range of industries, including chemical, petrochemical, biochemical, biotechnology, biomedical, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, electronics and environment-related ones.

You can become a technologist, project supervisor or assistant engineer in any process, design, control, operations or maintenance units. Or work as an R&D, pollution control or plant safety officer.

Plus, a recent graduate employment survey revealed that our CBE graduates have one of the highest average starting salaries!

Further Studies

CBE grads are able to pursue a wide range of degrees offered by the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. These include degree courses in chemical & biomolecular engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, material sciences, chemistry, physics and biological sciences.

In fact, you may enjoy exemptions of up to two years when you apply for related degree programmes at the following overseas universities:

• University of Manchester (UK)
• Imperial College (UK)
• Newcastle University (UK)
• University of Birmingham (UK)
• Loughborough University (UK)
• University of Melbourne (Australia)
• University of Queensland (Australia)
• University of Adelaide (Australia)
• University of Western Australia (Australia)
• University of New South Wales (Australia)

What’s more, you now have the option of applying for a degree in Chemical Engineering at the Singapore Institute of Technology. Offered in partnership with the University of Newcastle, this two-year direct honours programme is subsidised and is conducted right here on NP’s campus.
