As the only course in Singapore that integrates biological and chemical sciences with engineering concepts, the Diploma in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) will train you to be very versatile to tap myriad career opportunities. The broad-based curriculum covers chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, environment science, engineering and life sciences.
In your first year, you will learn about organic and biological chemistry, inorganic and physical chemistry, chemical and biochemical engineering, and biomolecular science. Second year modules offer an in-depth study of biopharmaceutical technology, chemical engineering processes, analytical chemistry, engineering materials and reaction engineering.
In your final year, you will go on a six-month internship to give you an opportunity to put your learning into practice. You can opt for either an Industry Internship with companies such as Chevron Oronite, ExxonMobil, Shell Petrochemicals and GlaxoSmithKline or a Research Internship in a local or an overseas research facility.
In addition, you have the choice of deepening your knowledge with one of two exciting specialisation options. Both options cover modules on process engineering design, process instrumentation and control as well as unit operations.
Specialisation OptionsGeneral Chemical Engineering
This option provides students with the critical skills for analysing chemical processes specific to the petrochemical and specialty chemical industries.
Pharma & Biopharmaceuticals
This option provides students with knowledge of the different chemical processes, quality assessments, and the regulatory environment specific to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing industries.
CBE graduates enjoy good employment prospects as there is a huge chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical sector in Singapore.Industries:• Refineries or Petrochemical• Fine & Specialty Chemicals
• Pharmaceutical or Biochemical• Biopharmaceuticals• Environment-related• Electronics• Food & Beverage• Analytical Laboratories
Positions:Assistant Engineer, Research Engineer, Project Supervisors, Lab Technologist, Lab Analyst, Chemical Product Specialist, Plant Operators, Technical Officers
CBE graduates can pursue a wide range of degrees offered by National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).Related degrees that CBE graduates can pursue at NUS, NTU and SIT include:
