Giving you that something Xtra
-
The only course of its kind with a two-year internship programme at National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Healthcare Group of polyclinics.
-
Additional certifications in speacialised skills such as phlebotomy (blood collection) and electrocardiogram (ECG) tests
-
Prepares you for international certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists for medical laboratory technologists
About the Diploma
They say blood type influences everything from your personality to the type of food you should eat. Sounds gimmicky? Then learn about the real deal with our Diploma in Biomedical Laboratory Technology (BLT), where we will take you into the exciting world of diagnosing diseases through blood samples.
As a BLT student, you will get first-hand exposure to the clinical laboratory setting as well as take modules in clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical haematology, endocrinology, proteomics and genomics.
Industry Exposure
You will be given plenty of time to hone your lab skills with a two-year internship at the National University Hospital or Tan Tock Seng Hospital. There, you will be taught by senior clinicians and medical technologists themselves.
You will also be attached to a National Healthcare Group polyclinic for seven weeks as well as undertake a research project in your final year.
Additional Certification
And there’s more! You can also get a certificate in phlebotomy (blood collection) and learn to carry out electrocardiogram (ECG) tests on patients. After graduation, you’ll be eligible to sit for the international certification examination for medical laboratory technologists set by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). This internationally recognised qualification will give you a distinct advantage if you wish to work abroad.
A Unique Option
As BLT has a common entry point with the Diploma in Biomedical Science (BMS), you will apply to enter the Diploma in Biomedical Science course first. You can then choose either BMS or BLT at the end of your first year. An interview will be conducted by NUH for those who are interested in BLT.
Career Prospects
Singapore aims to be Asia’s healthcare service hub. The target: to attract one million foreign patients each year by 2012. This translates to bright prospects for qualified healthcare professionals such as our BLT grads! As a medical technologist, you will be able to find excellent careers with hospitals, polyclinics and diagnostic laboratories. Alternatively, you could work in laboratories set up by research institutions, universities and private companies.
Further Studies
BLT grads are able to pursue a wide range of degree programmes at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. These degrees include biological science, chemistry, bioengineering, medicine, education, architecture, dentistry, business, psychology and social science.
What’s more, you may be granted up to two years of exemptions when applying for related courses in biological science, biomedical science, laboratory medicine or medical technology at overseas universities such as: • RMIT University (Australia) • University of Melbourne (Australia) • Monash University (Australia) • University of Queensland (Australia) • University of Leicester (UK) • Imperial College (UK) • Queensland University of Technology (Australia) • McGill University (Canada) • Queen’s University Belfast (UK) • Armstrong Atlantic State University (US)
