Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology (MBIO)

What can I study?

It's all about choice !!!

With a Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology, you will have a huge range of degree level courses to choose from.

Most of our graduates proceed onto science degree programmes where they specialized in subjects such as Biotechnology, Biological Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Immunology, Biomedical Science, Marine Biology and Horticulture.

A number of Biotechnology graduates have accepted into Pharmacy degree programmes in Singapore and overseas. For example, our 2006 Biotechnology GlaxoSmithKline Gold Medalist, Matthew Lin is studying Pharmacy in Australia. Chan Yew Kok who graduated in 1992 is a pharmacist at Mt Alvernia Hospital.

Others such as 2005 graduate Keith Lim pursued a degree in Food Technology at the University of Leeds and then proceeded to complete his Ph.D in this area.

Some proceed onto engineering degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Wilson Loh who graduated in 1994 completed a degree in the area of Biochemical Engineering while Wu Yew Seng studied Materials Science at the Nanyang Technological University.

Others pursue courses in business or the humanities such as law, art, sociology and computer science. A number of Biotechnology graduates such as Yip Soo Fern, our 1993 Gold Medallist, are now chartered accountants. Qiu Meiqi is studying law at the University of London.

And of course there is Medicine . Biotechnology graduates have been accepted into both undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes in the Singapore, UK, Australia and the United States of America.

If you do well in your diploma, you may even get up to 1 year of exemptions from your degree.

How about overseas?

Let's first start by saying that Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology is a recognised world class qualification. Graduates have performed well in the top universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the United States of America.

It is not uncommon for our Biotechnology graduates to receive a First-class honours degree!!

Many overseas universities will grant you generous exemptions such that you will be able to complete an honours degree or its equivalent in only 2 years. Biotechnology graduates have excelled in or are able to apply to the following universities (note that this list is not exhaustive).

Studying Biotechnology in Ngee Ann had been a memorable and enriching experience. This course provides many hands-on experiences through lab sessions and projects that reinforce the theory taught. The diversity in topics was also good as it enabled me to understand and identify my strength and area of interest. This triggered my curiosity and quest in wanting to learn more."

Dr. Tan  Kaeling
Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology, Class of 2000
PhD (University of Melbourne)
Currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard Medical School.

What's next?

Many Biotechnology graduates proceed onto complete their Ph.Ds particularly in the area of life sciences. For example,

Dr. Caine Leong (BIO 1996) completed his Ph.D. at the National University of Singapore

Dr. Oh Hui Kian and Dr. Ivan Tan(BIO 1992) undertook their research at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.

Many graduates go further afield.

For example, Dr. Goh Lay Keow (BIO 1993) and Dr. Lindi Tan (BIO 2001) completed their Ph.D.s at Johns Hopkins University.  Lay Keow was an A*STAR scholar while Lindi now works as a venture capitalist.

Dr. Tan Yoke Cheng (BIO 1995) , Dr. Teo Hsiang Ling (BIO 1996)   and Dr. Samantha Loh Hui Yong (BIO 1992) completed their Ph.D.'s at Cambridge Unviersity. 1992 graduates,

Dr. Linda Lua and Dr. Pang Siew Siew (BIO 1994) completed their Ph.D.s at the University of Queensland

Dr. Tan Kaeling (BIO 2000) and Dr. Chris Wong (BIO 1999) recently completed their Ph.D.s at the University of Melbourne.

So MBIO grads really do go places!!!
