What is so special about the Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology?

It is the broad based nature of the diploma.

Not only will you learn the fundamentals of life sciences (Genomics Proteomics, Bionformatics, Molecular Biology etc) but your course will also be rich in chemistry and microbiology. You will also learn to apply your skills in areas such as plant science, aquaculture, bioprocess technology, drug discovery and biopharmaceutical technology.

The projects you will be doing are similarly diverse. For example, MBIO students can be attached to institutions in the Biopolis, the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences at Jurong Island, the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority, the Institute of Environment Engineering and Science as well as local and multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Where will I work?

MBIO graduates are in very high demand in Singapore.

Employers include

  • R&D laboratories at the Genome Institute of Singapore, Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Temasek Life Science Laboratories,  National Neuroscience Institute, Bioprocess Technology Institute and the National Cancer Centre
  • Life science and analytical support companies like Research Biolabs, Biorad and GE Healthcare
  • Food and pharmaceutical companies like Kikoman, Yakult, Merlion Pharmaceuticals, Schering Plough and GlaxoSmithKline
  • Government bodies like the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority, the National Environment Agency, the Health Sciences Authority, and the Defence, Science & Technology Agency
  • Hospitals like the Singapore General Hospital, National University Hospital, Tan Tock Sing Hospital, Changi General Hospital and the KK Women's Hospital.
  • Companies involved in the sales and marketing of scientific products and pharmaceuticals

In fact, the recent developments in the Pharmaceutical sector will further increase the demand for MBIO graduates!!

Companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Lonza, Genentech and Novartis are already in the process of building large scale cell culture facilities for the production of biopharmaceuticals.

So with a Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology, the world is certainly your oyster!!
