Every year, the Sports Boules Singapore (Boules is another name for Petanque) organizes Inter-Poly Tertiary Petanque Championship in the month of October.
Petanque or Boules is a game which originated in France and is popular not only in France but all over Europe. You would see people playing Petanque in Sentosa - Singapore as well!
For the 2011 championships, two NP teams, out of seven initial teams, made it to the finals and eventually won a Silver and a Bronze medal. Congratulations! In earlier years, NP won one Bronze medal in 2007, one Silver and two Bronze medals in 2008, one Silver and one Bronze medal in 2010.
Each team in the Inter-Poly Petanque Championship comprises 3 participants. These participants are from the Basic Conversational French module in IS, Enhancement Programme - Foreign Language (IS), French Club or students who are interested in French culture. Our NP students have competed against participants from NTU, NUS, SP, RP, NYP, MI & JCs. |
| It is played between 2 teams and each team has 3 players. The playing surface is like a baseball infield (dirt, gravel, hard-packed sand) with a boundary. There is a small wooden ball and each player is given 3 metal balls. One has to stand in a circle drawn in the petanque court, and roll / lob / throw one's ball (metallic ball the size of an orange) as close as possible to a target wooden ball (jack). The first team to arrive at 13 points wins. |

Ngee Ann students participate in this inter-tertiary Petanque Championship every year, and often performed well to win medals. We are indeed proud of their hard work and consistent efforts.
