THE JAPANESE SPEECH CONTEST IN SINGAPORE 2009

The Japanese Speech Contest organised by the Japan Association is held annually in Singapore. The contest aims to encourage Japanese language learners to strive for greater excellence and to enhance the understanding and relationship between Singapore and Japan. The format for the contest was developed by the Japanese Cultural Society in 1968 and initially, it only included an adult category. The dramatic increase in the number of students learning Japanese as a third language prompted the Japanese Association to organise a Students’ Eloquence Contest in 1995. The two contests were combined in 1996 to form the Japanese Speech Contest. This combined format has been retained for this year’s contest.

The 2009 Japanese Speech Contest was held on 5 July at the Japanese Association.  Previous EP Intermediate Japanese 201 student, Yeo Jing Xiang (S10047749J) was chosen as one of the semi-finalists in the Tertiary Category. Previous EP Intermediate Japanese 202 student, Lim Yee Siew (S10037612J) also came in fifth for the Tertiary Category. Her speech was on the topic, “Letter to Myself- 10 Years from Now”.
