 Outstanding I&E projects

National Day Carnival

Nine groups of Innovation & Enterprise in Action (IEA) students got together to put up a carnival of games, songs and food to celebrate and to raise funds for Ngee Ann’s Student Aid Fund. Students were given a free hand to design their games and produce food items to reflect the national day theme, with some guidance from the National Day Carnival (NDC) committee.

Over two days, home-cooked food, self-designed cookies, and innovative games were showcased during the carnival. We had our own Ngee Ann Poly game show titled “Songs of Singapore”, which was inspired by “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” Using national day songs, this game show entertained audiences and rewarded participants with attractive prizes.  Photos taken by IEA students of how they viewed Singapore went on sale, while another group built a 6 x 4.5metres flag using balloons.

On top of all the exciting activities, there was an educational component too. Students learnt about the benefits of doing a proper hand wash through a maze. Lastly, there was also a mini race across campus with game stations inspired by the various milestones in Singapore’s history.

The carnival showed that NP students possessed an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.  All they need is a little encouragement and a platform!

The IEA students learnt alot as they had to design their own games and activities, while engaging in sales and marketing, and managing costs.
Overall, they raised more than $2000 for the Student Aid Fund. Two teams stood out for their perseverance in the face of challenges - in particular, the “Songs of Singapore” and the "Flag a Balloon" team.

"Asian Games for Toddlers @ South West" & Fringe Event - in conjunction with the Asian Youth Games Torch Relay @ South West

"Asian Games for Toddlers" was an event organised in celebration of the 1st Asian Youth Games in Singapore.

Highlights included an "Asian Games for Toddlers @ South West" where more than 100 toddlers were engaged in games played by toddlers from Asian countries.  Especially for families, there were carnival games and a creative photo-taking booth.

Mr Gan Kim Yong and Ms Amy Khor graced the event as Guests-of-Honour.

An IEA (Innovation and Enterprise) student team was responsible for designing and executing the event. They received resources, guidance and inputs from South West CDC and an events management company. However, they were given the mandate and space to exercise innovation and creativity in coming up with the games and fringe event concepts.  They were also given free play to manage it on the day itself.

This project was outstanding in impact as it stretched the students' abilities and fuelled their enthusiasm to contribute to the community. Two student teams formed the organising and implementation committee for the component events.

Despite the tight timelines given, the students embraced the opportunity to work on an authentic IEA project, in collaboration with an external agency/clients. The students not only gave a lot, but gained a lot too. They received collaborative mentoring from external volunteer leaders and professionals who were also involved in this project.
