When Worlds Collide
A workshop brought to you by the IS Secondary School Outreach Programme
IS played host to 110 students from Fajar Secondary School in 2011 at a workshop titled "When Worlds Collide." The workshop was led by IS lecturers who facilitated student groups as they discussed the reasons behind global conflict, and why nations go to war.
A highlight of the workshop was the flag emblem design competition. Students were teamed in groups of eight, with each group representing an imaginary country. They were then tasked to identify the values and principles that their countries adhered to, and to symbolise them on a flag. They then had to decide which values were most significant to their country and rank them according to importance. The students were asked : "Should there be a conflict between countries, which of these values would you be most willing to compromise? "
Each student group presented compelling arguments and presented their case with conviction. At the end of the day, the students not only had fun watching the debate and hearing their schoolmates present from different perspectives; they had also gained a better understanding of global conflict and an awareness of world events--all the while enjoying themselves!
