The IS Year 3 curriculum also offers a wide selection of modules. Apart from taking the prescribed module, World Issues: A Singapore Perspective, you will choose one other general module that interests you.

World Issues: A Singapore Perspective

You
ve heard it. Youve been told. The world is changing rapidly at a pace that dazzles the mind. Not merely a history lesson, WISP equips you with an understanding of current, major global issues. It looks at how city-state Singapore defied the odds and witnessed close to half a century of rapid economic growth, strong political ties and social harmony. WISP invites you to embark on a journey beyond knowledge, a journey that will change your life. Highlights of previous WISP activities include the Heroes seminar, the SAF camp visits, a dialogue session with the Law Minister, and a discussion session with the Manpower Minister.

THIRD YEAR ELECTIVE MODULES


1. Communication

  
Communication modules are designed to help you think critically and communicate confidently. You will develop skills in communication through face-to-face interaction, writing and learning activities set in an organisational context.

Designing Promotional Materials   
This module introduces you to pertinent aspects of developing effective promotional materials, from planning and strategy to conceptualisation and creative execution. Through this module, you will acquire a basic understanding of copywriting and visual design. One of the assignments you will embark on involves developing a set of promotional materials and making a short presentation based on a given brief.

Events Communication    
In this module, you will learn how to develop events-management proposals, including communication media plans and working timelines for organising events. There will be opportunities for experiential learning through class excursions and major events. The process of writing proposals for events will help you develop creative conceptualisation and bring together design elements to support your event, including strategising media communication.

Human Communication  
Successful communication starts with oneself. From an understanding of self and inner speech, this module moves in widening circles to communication patterns in interpersonal, family, group and organisational contexts. The approach is experiential and encourages participation in activities, games, role play and case analyses. The aim is to communicate effectively in your personal and professional life


Corporate Communication    
Nike. Levi’s. Apple. Coca Cola. How do these companies stay on top of consumer consciousness? Can companies bounce back after times of crisis? This module will help you find the answers to these questions and more! Unlock the success secrets of the world’s biggest brands. Learn how companies shape and communicate their corporate image and identity through branding and corporate citizenry. At the same time, develop the skills to effectively position a company through strategies and communication material to keep ahead of the competition.


2. Life Skills
    
People who can think creatively and analytically will be in high demand in this fast-changing economy. That's where our Life Skills modules will give you the edge. These modules help you to understand constraints impacting choice in an organisational setting.

Effective Negotiation    
You negotiate all the time. You do it at home, while shopping and at work.  For some, this is easy, but for others, negotiation is a source of conflict to be resisted and avoided. Knowing the art of negotiation enables you to influence the negotiation process, steering it towards your goals. Experiential and interactive activities help you acquire negotiation skills to shape the entire negotiation process and turn objections into opportunities.


Ethical Dilemmas    

Is the death penalty ever fair? Are we justified in eating animals? Does a human embryo have rights? What makes right or wrong, and why should we act ethically anyway? Ever so often, it’s difficult to make the right choice. In this module, you will use your moral compass to navigate the real world of ethical choices. You will hone your skills of reasoning, argument and decision-making as we explore ethical issues from school, work, home and beyond.

Mind Quest for Excellence    
This module is based on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) - the psychology of excellence and the technology of achievement. Your NLP learning journey will enable you to have a deeper understanding of how your mind (neuro) and daily language (linguistic) influence your behaviour. You will also acquire the skills and techniques to help you reprogramme yourself to attain exceptional results in your lives.

Personal Fitness Management
This module aims to enhance knowledge and understanding of personal fitness and training. You will learn basic fitness regime design and implementation of fitness programmes for individuals and groups. You will also be exposed to the fundamentals of exercise and fitness conditioning, exercise prescription and execution of proper techniques. Module assessments include the NAPFA test, theory, practical and a group project. This module is not for students who have been exempted from NAPFA.  

Art of War: Leadership & Business  
This module provides an insight into Sun Zi’s military principles and their modern-day application to corporations and business. You will learn to apply these principles to personal and leadership development and build a conceptual framework of management approaches. The aim is to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and develop analytical thinking about competitive strategies.



3. Entrepreneurship

Driven by globalisation, today's business environment is changing at a dizzying pace and throwing up many challenges to professionals. These modules help you develop the skills needed to thrive in this environment. 


Food Politics & Social Entrepreneurship NEW!
This module will encourage you to think critically about food production and consumption habits through an introduction to food production models and the food justice movements especially in the context of Asia. The overall aim is to get you to see the complex problems in local and global food production as opportunities for socially responsible and profitable action. You will learn the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship and devise a business plan for a social enterprise that responds to local food justice issues.

Introduction to Services Marketing
Exceptional companies deliver superior service to differentiate themselves and stay competitive. In this module you will appreciate the unique characteristics of service as compared to goods, and how real companies such as SIA shape service marketing strategies. Field trips and case studies will help you understand the significance of delivering optimal customer experience as well as the impact of the Internet on service marketing.


Business and the Economy     
Learn to explain, in economic terms, why “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and understand what the following statement means:

“The economy shrank in the last quarter and forecast to contract the following year, with a possible drop in consumer prices, prompting a one-off currency devaluation.”

This module explains the fundamentals of the business unit as well as the economy. You will learn how to assess economic performance as well as evaluate the impact of government policies. 

 

Insight into the Tourism Industry    

F1…IR…YOG…..it’s all happening!!  Take a glimpse into the dynamics of the tourism scene.  Gain insights into the various tourism sectors such as travel, hospitality, MICE (Meetings, Incentive travel, Conventions, Exhibitions), food and beverage, and tourism organisations like the Singapore Tourism Board.  Learn about the impact on tourism, how a destination markets itself, and the services the tourism sectors create to bring about the much sought-after experience.  You might want to be a part of the excitement at the end of the course!

Investing in the Stock Market    
Which markets do bulls, bears and stags go to?  The stock market of course! Clueless about these terms to describe various investors? Enroll in this module and unravel the complexities of the stock market to understand the fundamentals and technicals which drive the markets.  You may not be able to invest like Warren Buffett at the end of this module, but we can certainly set you on the road to becoming a more knowledgeable and financially savvy investor.


4. Media and the Arts
 
Learn about the impact of the arts and media on an individual and the world. The modules in this category offer you an insight into print and broadcast media, visual art, photography, film and music.

Appreciating Artwork  
This module aims to give you an overall appreciation of various art forms. You will interpret paintings from around the world and learn about major periods in the history of art in Western and Eastern civilisations.


Understanding the Media
 
 

What do Paris Hilton, Fann Wong, President Barack Obama and Mr. Lee Kuan Yew have in common?  They are all dependent on media processes which shape political and social communication.  This invigorating module introduces different forms and functions of media, its roles and effects, and the main concepts in understanding how media affect and influence its audiences.  At the end of the module, you will be able to analyse popular media content and appreciate how media exert influences on audiences.

Sports & Media  
This module helps you understand the mutual impact of sports and the media. You will explore the trends and pervasive presence of sports and the media in platforms such as prints and electronic. Through discussion and talks with sports content providers, you will appreciate the effects of commercialisation, marketing, associated partnership and the emotional motivations of audiences on sports and the revenue it earns.


5. Science and Technology


Every day, we see huge advances in science and technology that have huge implications for the world around us. To help you keep pace with these changes and understand their impact, choose a module from Science and Technology. 

The Fragrance Industry: Science of Smell NEW!     
This module gives you an overview of the fragrance industry and how perfumes are classified, described and made. Through simple experiments, you will also be equipped with evaluative skills to look at fragrances and their applications.

Traditional Chinese Medicine NEW!     
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is widely recognised as a supplementary medicine and is increasingly being regarded as an important realm of study/research. This form of alternative medicine, using ingredients from nature, takes a holistic and moderate approach to treatments. The aim of this module is to enable you to understand the Chinese approach to balance in the human body for well-being and how ailments can be addressed through the use of natural treatments such as herbs and acupuncture. 

The World of Aerospace    
This module highlights the development of the aerospace industry in Singapore and its future prospects and challenges. You will gain a broad perspective of the fundamental applications of aerospace technology, with emphasis on the local aerospace industry and its related socio-economic issues. You will also learn the basic principles of flight, appreciate the fundamentals of aircraft systems and understand how aviation regulators around the world make flying the safest mode of travel.

Home Electricity    
This module aims to provide you with a basic understanding of how electricity is distributed in a house, how it can be handled safely and how to conserve energy. Lessons are complemented with hands-on sessions where you will acquire skills to perform basic troubleshooting on simple home lighting and power circuits.

Mobile Robotics    
Want to create and show off a simple robot that you can build in a snap? Learn how to use LEGO construction sets and programming software to build and programme a robot in a fun and entertaining way. This exciting module covers the fundamental concepts and components of a simple autonomous navigating robot, the hardware elements, construction techniques and the software control for movement to follow a path. At the end of this module, you are required to build and programme an autonomous robot with the necessary features to accomplish an assigned task.
