  Level 3 IS Modules 

The Year 3 curriculum also offers a wide selection of modules. Apart from taking the prescribed module, World Issues: A Singapore Perspective, you will choose one other general module that you are interested in.


THIRD YEAR PRESCRIBED IS MODULE

World Issues: A Singapore Perspective

This module promises you an exciting journey over the course of a semester! In this module, you will be learning more about current world issues and events and exploring how these issues affect your lives in Singapore.  By the end of the course, you will have gained a deeper understanding of global and national concerns and will be able to articulate informed, considered opinions on what is going on in our world.


THIRD YEAR ELECTIVE IS MODULES

1. Communication

Communication modules are designed to help you think critically and communicate confidently. You will develop skills in communication through face-to-face interaction, writing and learning activities set in an organisational context. 
   

Business Communication    
This module aims to develop your verbal and written communication skills in a corporate context to help you prepare for the working world. The module compares and contrasts corporate and student cultures and introduces some of the basic norms of communication at work. You will learn how to engage in business correspondences, write brief proposals, write minutes, and conduct meetings.

Customer Service Communication    
This module encourages you to develop a customer-oriented mindset, sensitising you to the rising expectations of customers in an increasingly competitive marketplace.  You will develop effective communication and problem-solving skills in identifying customer needs, closing deals, and maintaining and managing customer relationships.

Designing Promotional Materials  (not offered in AY 08/09)     
This module introduces you to the pertinent aspects of developing effective promotional materials, from planning and strategy to conceptualisation and creative execution.  Through this module, you will acquire a basic understanding of copywriting and visual design.  For a given brief, you will develop a set of promotional materials and make a short presentation.

Events Communication    
In this module, you will learn how to develop events-management proposals, including communication media plans and working timelines for organising events. There will be opportunities for experiential learning during class excursions to major events.  You will write proposal reports for staging events across a range of given topics.  You will also develop creative concepts and design elements to support your events proposal and communication media strategies.

Human Communication  
Communication is the key to building meaningful relationships. Learn to develop effective communication patterns in interpersonal, family, group and organisational contexts.  The approach is experiential and you will be participating in activities, such as games, role playing and analysing case studies, from which you will learn about communication principles, yourself and others.  Human Communication will enable you to communicate more effectively in your personal life as well as in the workplace .

Project Communication    
This module highlights the importance of effective communication for a successful project. In this module, you will learn how to develop a clear strategy through communication planning, information distribution, performance reporting and administrative closure .

Online Communications Campaigns  (not offered in AY 08/09)     
This module will equip you with a working knowledge of Web-based communication interfaces. You will explore various strategies involved in the design of online campaigns and use them to develop an integrated online communications campaign for different purposes and audiences .

Corporate Communication    
Every business has an image in the eyes of its customers and other stakeholders. This module will provide you with the skills necessary for communicating that corporate image and shaping corporate identity. Through an understanding of corporate strategies, such as branding and corporate citizenry, you will learn how to position a company and produce relevant communication material. You will be exposed to the various communication channels and will learn to choose those communication strategies that best fit the target audience.

Technical Writing  (not offered in AY 08/09)     
As you step out to work, be prepared to write technical documents such as manuals, procedures, proposals, brochures, and web pages. You will get a head start with this module, which guides you through audience analysis, the writing process, editing, proofreading and reviewing your own work as well as designing and presenting your documents.


2. Life Skills

People who can think creatively and come up with new and fresh ideas will be in high demand in this fast changing economy. That's where our Life Skills modules will give you the edge. These modules help you to uncover and develop your strengths that will be useful to you in future.

Effective Negotiation    
You negotiate all the time at home, as a consumer and at work.  For some it seems easy, but for others negotiation is a source of conflict to be resisted and avoided whenever possible.  Negotiation is a life skill, and if you know the art of negotiating, then you will be able to influence the negotiation process in order to steer it towards your goals. Through experiential and interactive activities, you will acquire negotiation skills to shape the entire negotiation process and turn objections into opportunities.

Effective People Management    
This module provides a fundamental understanding of essential people skills in an organisational context in order to prepare you for your future role as an executive or manager in your discipline.  In this module, you will learn to create positive relationships, handle conflicts, and coach and mentor in the four key managerial functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling in the context of ethical decision-making.

Ethical Dilemmas    
This module is tailor-made for those who enjoy engaging in discussion and debate on a wide range of ethically controversial topics.  Moral issues that you may encounter in school and the workplace are brought up for examination.  More wide-ranging societal issues are covered as well, such as euthanasia, abortion, gender inequality, sexual harassment, questionable business/corporate practices, and ethics in advertising.

Living in the Information Era    
The newly emerging information society is impacting people all over the world.  Knowledge, skills, and creativity are becoming the key assets for an individual’s success.  This module looks at various issues pertaining to the impact of information technology on work, education, intellectual property, privacy, ethics, and security.  In this module, you will also learn to participate effectively in online collaboration using Wiki.  This awareness will help you cope better in the information era.

Mind Quest for Excellence    
This module explores skills that help you achieve a deeper understanding of how your mind functions and how daily language influences your behaviour.  In this module, you will learn about certain tools that can help you install a new “bio-program” designed to enhance your daily performance and align your behaviour to your belief and value systems .

Art of War: Leadership & Business  
This module gives you an overview of Sun Zi’s military principles and its modern day applications to personal development and business management. The overall aim is to promote analytical thinking about competitive strategies and enhance the qualities of leadership.


3. Entrepreneurship

Driven by globalisation, today's business environment is changing at a dizzying pace and throwing up many challenges to professionals. These modules help you develop the skills needed to compete in this environment.


Business and the Economy     
This module explains the fundamentals of the economy through an examination of constituent units such as the consumer, the firm and the industry. You will learn how to assess economic performance as well as evaluate the impact of government policies on world economies .

Fast Startup through Franchising  (not offered in AY 08/09)     
This module is designed to help you develop a clear picture of franchising and franchisors.  In this module, you will learn about the nature of franchising, the characteristics of the franchiser and franchisee.  You will also learn to evaluate franchising opportunities, address legal concerns, and develop appropriate franchising strategies.

Insight into the Tourism Industry    
This module will introduce you to the tourism industry and the various segments within it.  In this module, you will learn about the growth and impact of tourism, different modes of travel, management of events and conventions as well as the roles of various tourism organisations. You will also learn about tourism trends, strategies, and product development in Singapore through case-study analysis and other projects.

Investing in the Stock Market    
This module provides an understanding of the history, participants and workings of the stock market.  In this module, you will learn how to use and interpret financial information from various sources for informed decision-making in investments. This module will cover the fundamentals of the stock market, the various instruments traded, the rudiments of trading and settlement procedures, and the risks involved. 

Introduction to Financial Services  (not offered in AY 08/09)       
This module will introduce you to the financial sector in Singapore and the roles, functions and services provided by the different financial institutions and markets, with emphasis on those that are relevant to an entrepreneur.  In this module, you will learn about the various products and services offered by the financial sector and the different sources of financing available for starting and expanding a business.


4. Arts and Media

Learn about the impact of the arts and media on an individual and the world. The modules in this category offer you an insight into print and broadcast media, visual art, photography, film, and music.

Appreciating Artwork    
This module aims to give you an overall appreciation of various art forms.  In this module, you will interpret paintings from around the world and learn about major periods in the history of art in Western and Eastern civilisations.

Understanding the Media    
This module aims to provide you with an appreciation of the various forms of media, including radio, television, film, and the Internet.  In this module, you will also examine the functions and impact of media. 

Introduction to Marketing Communications  (not offered in AY 08/09)    
The module explains the purpose of the different marketing communication tools and highlights how these tools are implemented by real businesses.  In this module, you will conduct a market analysis and be challenged to come up with an integrated marketing communications strategy for a local brand.


5. Science and Technology

Everyday, we see huge advances in science and technology that have huge implications for the world around us. Our modules help you keep pace with these latest changes and to understand the impact of these new developments on us.

The World of Aerospace    
This module highlights the development of the aerospace industry in Singapore and its future prospects and challenges. In this module, you will gain a broad perspective of the fundamental applications of aerospace technology, with an emphasis on the local aerospace industry and its related socio-economic issues. You will also learn the basic principles of flight, appreciate the fundamentals of aircraft systems and understand how aviation regulators around the world make flying the safest mode of travel.

Home Electricity    
This module aims to provide you with a basic understanding of how electricity is distributed in a house, how it can be handled safely and how to conserve energy.  Lessons are complemented with hands-on sessions where you will acquire the skills to perform basic trouble-shooting on simple home lighting and power circuits.

Mobile Robotics    
This module will cover the fundamental concepts, hardware elements and software control of an autonomous mobile robot.  It will also focus on the construction of a simple navigating robot and the control of its basic movement.  In this module, you will use Lego construction bricks for fast prototyping with programs written in “MindStorm.” A robot competition will be held for all students at the end of the module.

PC Technology    
This module will provide you with a basic understanding of the rapid changes in PC Technology. The syllabus is designed to largely overlap with the popular A+ Certification program in the United States. Upon completion of the module, you will be prepared to take the A+ Certification tests and gain additional certification recognition.

Eco-Efficiency for Profit  (not offered in AY 08/09)    
This module shows how eco-efficiency helps organisations expand income and reduce operating costs and ecological harm.  In this module, you will evaluate eco-efficiency technologies and techniques applied in manufacturing. You will also explore eco-efficiency innovations in products and services through video reviews and case-study analysis.
