 LEVEL 2 IS MODULES 

Level 2 modules develop innovative thinking, an entrepreneurial mindset and broad perspective. Elective modules come in four categories: Arts and Humanities, Business, Design, and Science and Technology.  

SECOND YEAR PRESCRIBED MODULES 


Idea Blueprint
This module helps students uncover their strengths and limitations, and the resources at their disposal. Through an experiential project that harnesses the diverse strengths and synergy of team members, students are guided to achieve group outcomes.

Idea Launchpad
This module further hones and develops students' innovative and entrepreneurial traits through developing product prototypes, services or concepts based on the blue sky solutions created in Idea Blueprint. Students test these ideas with customers and stakeholders, using the feedback to continually improve design. The final design/concept is presented to an audience through posters.                                                                           

 

SECOND YEAR ELECTIVE MODULES  

Now you can select two IS elective modules at Level 2 and one at Level 3 from the following categories. From AY 2011, you need to obtain passes in at least two categories. This means you will be allowed a maximum of two elective modules from any one category. For example, if you have passed two modules in Arts and Humanities at Level 2, you will not be allowed to select another Arts and Humanities module at Level 3. So, plan carefully in order to make the most of your choice of Level 2 and Level 3 elective modules.

1. Arts and Humanities


Arts and Humanities modules are designed to help you think critically and communicate confidently, while developing a broader perspective. You can also enhance your knowledge of other cultures by choosing to learn a foreign language or sink your teeth into various media-related modules.

Basic Conversational French     
French is fun. Besides learning a new language, you will explore France, its culture, cuisine and people. At the end of the course, you will be able to use French in simple, everyday transactions—an asset in more than 20 French speaking countries. This module is not open to students who have taken French as an enhancement module.


Fencing is French                     
Fencing is French 

Basic Conversational German      
Beethoven, Tokio Hotel, Oktoberfest or The Love Parade. Have you ever wondered what Germany is really like? Explore Germany and other German speaking countries such as Austria and Switzerland by learning the language!
Equip yourself with basic communication skills for travel or business in Germany. Prepare for interaction with Germans or the more than 1,000 German companies in Singapore.

Basic Conversational Japanese     
Konichiwa! You’ve heard it in anime or J-pop and seen it in manga. Now, here’s your chance to learn the language and to say more than just “konichiwa.” You will have fun while acquiring simple vocabulary for basic conversations, and at the end of the module, you will also have an appreciation of Japanese culture. Basic Conversational Spanish        
Hola, amigos! You've probably heard that Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages on the planet. But did you know that its influence is spread across nearly 30 countries in five continents?  Besides learning the basics of everyday conversation in a fun and interactive environment, you'll also get to learn about the varied peoples and cultures that make up the Spanish-speaking world. Qué esperas? Come savour the richness and diversity of this fascinating language and its cultures!


Self Expression: Drama & Poetry   

Write a poem or a short play-script, improvise and act on stage? Is it possible? Yes, if you sign up for SEDP where you will get a taste of contemporary and classic poetry. Learn what impacts the senses of readers and feel the music of words. Also, learn how to craft a play-script and provide stage directions to produce, direct or act in a play.


Speaking with Impact
  
Would you like to create more impact when you speak? What is the key? Messages that are vivid, understood and remembered start with thorough preparation. In this module, you will learn the stylistics and structures for effective speaking and interacting. Join this learning journey to equip yourself with skills to speak confidently, interestingly and convincingly in different social and cultural contexts.


Understanding Relationships: Love and Sexuality 

What does it take to build healthy relationships? This module answers the question in key areas of romantic attachment and family. Quality relationships affect the quality of life. Therefore understanding the fundamentals of human interaction will impact interpersonal skills for effective living. At the end of the module, you will take away many valuable lifelong skills for cultivating meaningful relationships.

Business Etiquette & Image      
You gain a competitive edge in the business world when you project a professional image.
Learn how to manage your image, develop dress sense, make small talk, impress with good manners and social graces. Using experiential methods, Business Etiquette & Image allows you to apply new skills and knowledge acquired each week.

Introduction to Social Psychology       
Why do people conform? How does prejudice arise? Why don't people help one another in an accident? How powerful are self-fulfilling prophecies? How do we perceive people? Social psychological concepts help us explain human behaviour even when it’s seemingly irrational. By understanding social psychology, you will be empowered to make sense of social situations that you encounter daily and be equipped to manage interpersonal relations in your private and professional life.


Photojournalism: Critical Reflections
Well-taken photographs make thought-provoking and powerful statements. Through exposure to some of the world's most iconic photographers and photographs, you will be guided to critically explore the hidden stories and issues behind each image and understand the power of photos as a catalyst for social change. You will have opportunities to document and capture current social and global issues through the photographs you take.

History of Rock And Roll        
This module traces the rise of rock music from its beginnings in 1950s blues music to its continuing influence today. The focus will be on examining and enjoying different genres of rock music. You will discover what influenced and motivated rock artists, including Elvis Presley, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. 

Exploring Classical Music
As we can only appreciate beauty when we are aware of its presence, this module aims to enhance listening with factual insights while exploring the beauty and passion of music. Components such as the evolution of music, the instruments, basic composition techniques, concepts of shapes in music, music and multimedia are covered using a multifaceted approach that includes live performances experience. No prior training necessary.

Television Beyond Entertainment
    
    
This module uncovers the processes of behind-the-scenes television production. Through exposure to genres such as television drama, situation comedy, variety shows, MTV, news, documentaries and sports programmes, you will gain a better understanding of how television programmes are made, and become a more critical television viewer. 

Global Cities
The module introduces students to the economic, social and cultural characteristics of today's global cities. Attention will be paid to their diverse landscapes, from central business districts which are command centres of international commerce to ethnic neighbourhoods inhabited by immigrants and grim urban slums that house the poor. This module guides one to reflect critically on the growth and development of global cities spanning different continents.


2. Business

Driven by globalisation, today's business environment is changing at a dizzying pace and throwing up many challenges to professionals. These modules help you develop the skills needed to thrive in this environment.

Effective People Management (For EBM Only)     
What is the most important single ingredient in the formula for success? It is knowing how to get along with people. Come on this learning journey that will change your perspective of the people you meet each day. You will be equipped with concepts and skills that enable you to influence others positively, add value to teams and handle difficult people. 

Business and the Economy (For EBM Only)     
Learn to explain, in economic terms, why “there is no such thing as a free lunch” and understand what the following statement means:

“The economy shrank in the last quarter and forecast to contract the following year, with a possible drop in consumer prices, prompting a one-off currency devaluation.”

This module explains the fundamentals of the business unit as well as the economy. You will learn how to assess economic performance as well as evaluate the impact of government policies.

Entrepreneur and the Law          

Have you ever wondered what legal expressions like rescission, restitution, pecuniary, res ipsa loquitor and ejusdem generis mean?  If you are an aspiring entrepreneur and are keen to find out more about law, this module is for you. This module will take you step-by-step through contract, tort and intellectual property law. At the end of this module, you will have some knowledge of basic legal principles.  Have the law on your side – Know it. 

Principles of Management         

Do you want to have insights into effective management and to know how the principles of management can be applied to businesses? This practical module introduces you to the roles and functions of managers and the skills required by managers in a rapidly changing and competitive global environment. You will also learn how to plan, make decisions, organise jobs, lead and control businesses for success. So, if you want to learn how to be a good manager, this module is for you.

Starting a Business           

Have you always liked the idea of making your own decisions and being in control of your life? You will enjoy such freedom by starting your own business and being a Boss! This module provides you with some foundation knowledge in business. You will learn how to identify business opportunities, market your products, run the operations and figure out your finances. Even for those who may not be thinking of embarking on the entrepreneurial journey, this course will be beneficial as it provides insight into how businesses work.

Understanding Financial Statements   
Join us on a treasure hunt for undervalued companies in the stock market. Whether you are striking it out on your own or doing your own investment, it pays to understand financial jargon and stay ahead of the competition.  In this module you will learn basic accounting concepts, key components of the company’s financial statements and the tools and techniques for analysing financial statements. Understanding Financial Statements is particularly useful for aspiring entrepreneurs and/or equity investors.


3. Design
      
Learn about the impact of scale, colour, texture and space in the process of creating something functional and artistically pleasing. You will be guided by experts to understand the principles of design while you experience creating your own masterpiece.

Introduction to Interior Design       
This module operates like a design studio/laboratory and makes constant connections to the world we live in. You will participate actively in a communal creative environment of observing, exploring, presenting, critiquing and reviewing interior designs and environments. References to real life projects and site visits will enable you to appreciate how design is transformed into reality. You will also develop a keen sensitivity to design and aesthetics.


Introduction to Landscape Design
In this module, you will explore various landscape designs for multiple settings and functions. Upon learning basic landscape designs and principles,you will be able to draw on your creativity to produce designs that are functional, aesthetically appealing and conceptually pleasing to the self and others. Field visits to various gardens and parks, including the HortPark, will enable you to understand why Singapore is one of the garden cities of the world.
   
Fashion & Design: The Singapore Skin
This module initiates you into the world of fashion and design by experimenting with media ranging from lino and stencil prints to manipulating textiles surface, to painting with transfer dyes. You will be guided to develop design concepts that are representative of Singapore through exploration of cultural diversity, including places of interest, and flora and fauna. Working with patterns/motifs, you will learn to translate concepts and ideas into 3D form or a garment to suit your target market. No prior art training is necessary. 

Exploring Art & Design
This hands-on module lets you work with different media such as pencil, charcoal, galvanised wire or clay to produce drawings, collages, paintings and sculptures. The objective is to give you a platform to explore the potential and limits of materials in terms of perspective, spatial depth and pattern and design. You will also discover the synergy between engineering design and its artistic sources. No prior art training is necessary.

Exploring Photography         
This is a hands-on module that covers basic photography skills. You will be taught technical and aesthetic basics, including camera functions, compositions, optical properties, lighting and decisive moments. You will plan and shoot photographs and critique both your own work and that of other students. Your own digital camera is required for this class.



4. Science and Technology

Every day, we see huge advances in science and technology that have huge implications for the world around us. To help you keep pace with these changes and understand their impact, choose a module from Science and Technology.

Man and Machines        

Are you interested to find out how machines work? Are you keen to design, build and programme your own LEGO robot to perform a specific task? If your answer is “yes”, then this module will definitely interest you!   This module begins with an overview of basic engineering principles used in commonly found commercial product design and usage.  This is followed by a brief introduction to various types of commercial products for leisure, the home, and the office / industry.  To allow you to appreciate how machines work, there will be a 3-week project for you to design and build your own LEGO robot to complete three challenging tasks. Overall, this module will attempt to address how machines work, what they do, where they are found and their impact on man and his environment.


The Life Sciences Revolution      
Key developments in life sciences impact your daily life. For example, your next steak could be from a cloned animal. This module offers you the opportunity to role-play and debate topics such as cloning and discuss ethical issues arising from this field. You will come away with insights on transgenic animals, genetically modified foods, gene therapy and the Human Genome Project. 

Flash Applications          
If you’re an aspiring web-designer who wants to create and deliver the most compelling applications, content, and video to the widest possible audience
, this module is for you. This module uses Adobe® Flash® CS4 Professional, industry-leading authoring software, for creating engaging interactive experiences. Deliver to audiences across platforms and devices using the flash player, a cross-platform browser plug-in that delivers breakthrough Web experiences to over 99% of Internet users. Flash can be used to create presentations, online games, e-learning courseware, and much more. Once you are familiar with this software, the possibilities are endless.

Understanding Animation   
Have you ever wondered what animation is all about? If you have, this module is for you. It gives you a broad introduction to the animation industry, covering the history of animation, how animation is produced, as well as career opportunities. It adopts a hands-on approach to learning, providing students the opportunity to be creative by producing their own animations using simple drawings and filming with cameras. A talent in drawing is not essential as even simple drawings can come alive when the principles of animation are applied. At the end of the module, you will have a good understanding of how animations are produced and be the proud owner of your very own animation pieces. 

Serious Fun with e-Games Design          
This module introduces you to the current state of e-games as well as future trends. It uses creative thinking to take you on the design journey from basic idea to detailed game design. You will be exposed to key concepts in electronic game design, be challenged to come up with your own creative ideas and learn the various elements in structuring games. A technical background is not required.

 
5. Vacation Modules

IS offers you exciting opportunities to explore other countries and gain an international experience. Look out for the special modules offered during semestral breaks and apply when you see something you like.

Practical Research Methods 
This module will expose you to the basic processes and principles applied in social research. You will learn how to design a research project, collect information, analyse the data collected and apply research skills to uncover norms, values, attitudes and customs. As consumers are part of the fabric of social life, you can also employ your understanding of research techniques to develop a basic market survey.
