This was one of the most intense teaching and mentoring experiences I have ever had, and by far, the most fulfilling. Two weeks in Dumaguete in the Philippines with 20 TCP students and co-Team Leader, Kanaphat Kitratiprasan from SDAR, made for a memorable trip indeed. The students benefitted from a wide range of activities, such as teaching experiences, construction work, home-stays, leadership training, and institution and community visits. They were given opportunities to explore political and economic issues. Interactions with students and community representatives opened their eyes not only to the social concerns in Dumaguete, but enabled them to make connections to larger issues like globalization and unemployment that invariably affect Singapore society. The students were more than just passive recipients of learning experiences. They also benefitted from reflections and bonding sessions in which they discussed setting goals, de-cluttering their own lives, and improving their interpersonal skills. - Adelaine Manzano-Lee, Visiting Lecturer, School of Interdisciplinary Studies

My trip to Dumaguete City was a meaningful and fruitful one. There are so many experiences I had such as constructing a study hall for the school, going through a "live" television interview and understanding the Filipino culture. This trip gave me new perspectives and greater awareness of less privileged communities in other parts of the world. - Chew Bing Liang Alvin, 2nd year, Biomedical Science student |
The Dumaguete trip was a truly unforgettable experience as we realised how much the Philippine culture emphasises treasuring what we already have instead of pining for more. I have learnt to appreciate my family and friends for what they have done and for always providing their unconditional love. The values instilled in us made for a significant change in my life, and I believe, in the rest of my teammates' lives as well. - Lee Zhen Yi Kim, 2nd year, Business Studies student |

The most enjoyable and meaningful aspect of this trip for me was to be with a team comprising 22 unique individuals. I couldn’t have asked for a more vivacious team! My favourite moment during the trip came during the reflections, because this was the time that all team members shared their opinions on their experiences, and we never failed to gain new insights.
