Training courses in Wuhan, China To allow all students to have the opportunity to experience broad-based learning, IS makes continued efforts to send its expertise overseas. When NP recently launched its Diploma in Logistics Management (LMGT) at the Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST), IS simultaneously introduced several communication and life skills modules to complement the programme. The goal was to enable students in Wuhan to communicate effectively and think critically through six IS modules: Fundamentals of Writing, Building Oral Communication Skills 1 and 2, Creativity and Applied Thinking Skills, Report Writing and Entrepreneurship. The school also conducted an intensive English Language Bridging Course for freshmen prior to the start of the LMGT Diploma programme.
Collaborations in Southeast Asia
IS and the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs have also launched several collaborative ventures in Southeast Asia. They include programmes that allow sharing of language expertise, as well as a successful series of short-term training courses in English communication skills. In facilitating these courses, IS staff have travelled to neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia in order to help them develop their national human resources.
Joint Educational Programme with IFES in Brazil NP is in the process of developing a joint educational programme with Brazil's Instituto Federal do Espirito Santo (IFES). To help recruit students for the programme, IS lecturers Kow Kok Sing and Cindy Tong went to Brazil in Sep 2012 to conduct an English language entrance test for over 100 IFES graduates. Successful candidates are expected to come to Singapore in 2013 to do a 12-week intensive Technical English Course developed and delivered by IS before they embark on their Specialist Diploma course in Marine and Offshore Technology.
