IS CHALLENGES BOUNDARIES IN WUHAN, CHINA

By exporting its communication and life skills modules to Wuhan, a city in Hubei Province of China, IS has broken new grounds once again.

In September 2008, Ngee Ann Polytechnic went regional when it launched the Diploma in Logistics Management (LMGT) course at the Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST). Believing in the merits of a well-rounded education, IS hopped on board to offer students in Wuhan the same broad-based learning experience their Singaporean counterparts are exposed to.

The presence of IS in Wuhan has benefited students in many ways. As the LMGT course in Wuhan is conducted in English, a language that does not come naturally to the local students, IS saw the need to help them overcome the language barrier. It conducted a 120-hour intensive English Language Bridging Course four weeks prior to the start of the programme in order to help the students cope with the new demands.

IS has also helped students to communicate effectively and think critically. This has been done through a suite of six modules that are part of the three-year LMGT course. They include Fundamentals of Writing, Building Oral Communication Skills 1 and 2, Creativity and Applied Thinking Skills, and Report Writing and Entrepreneurship.

Xu Junjie, a first-year student who has just completed Building Oral Communication Skills 1 finds the module useful and feels that it has helped to broaden his mind. "This is the perfect module,” he says. “It has taught me how people communicate in the real world, and I feel I’m now better able to convey my ideas properly.”
