FAQ EP
1. Is it compulsory to register for foreign language?
It is optional. You can choose to take these courses if you wish to acquire basic communication skills in the language and to discover more about the culture.
2. What are the benefits of learning a foreign language?
An employer will see you as a bridge to new clients or customers if you know a foreign language. Students seeking careers in business, technology, social service or marketing will multiply their chances of success, if they have studied and are able to communicate in a foreign language.
3. What are the foreign languages being offered?
We are offering French, German, Bahasa Melayu, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Korean.
4. What do I get at the end of the programme?
You will receive 6 Enhancement Programme (EP) points for each semester if you pass the module. When you graduate, you will have a “Statement of Enhancement Programme” which lists the Foreign Language modules you have passed.
5. How do I know when to register for the Enhancement Programme?
Announcements are made through the Lotus Notes Events and Announcements page, NPal Student Homepage, the IS website, noticeboards and through your discipline schools. Registration usually begins in Week 17 of the semester.
6. Could I register for more than one language at the same time?
Yes, you can, if you can manage your time.
7. If I have basic level or a certificate in a particular language, which level should I register for?
You have to sit for a placement test conducted by a foreign language tutor and he / she will determine your proficiency level and place you accordingly.
8. Can an ex-NP student or a part-time student register for the course?
Only current full-time NP students are eligible for the course.
9. If I miss the registration deadline, can I still register?
You will be put on the Wait List if you missed the application deadline. You will not be charged any fees until your place in the class has been confirmed.
10. What happens if a class I am registered for has been cancelled?
A class may be cancelled due to insufficient enrolment. You will be notified and a full refund will be made to you through your bank account.
REGISTRATION
1. How much is the course fee?
The course fee is $150 + GST at the prevailing rate.
2. How do I register and what is the mode of payment for the course?
You can register and pay for the course fee at our NP ePay kiosks using your ATM or Cash Cards. These kiosks are located at our library and the Student Service & Information Centre at Blk 1. You will need to key in your NPAL user ID and password to complete the registration. If you are a new student, you can complete the Foreign Language Registration Form which can be downloaded from the e-Matriculation Guide and make payment by cheque or cashier’s order.
TIMETABLE
1. When can I know my class schedule?
The class schedule will be released a week before the start of the semester.
2. Where can I retrieve my class schedule?
To check your class group, venue and class time you can visit the IS Notice board at Blk 53, Level 5 or check your Student NPal website under "My List of EP".
3. If my class schedule clashes with my CCA, can I appeal to change my class schedule?
You may request for a change of class provided there are vacancies and provided your registration with the CCA club is not done after the release of the EP class schedule. You will need to seek written endorsement from the relevant SDAR authority to support your appeal.
4. When is the deadline for appeal to change my class schedule?
The deadline for appeal is the on the Thursday of the first week of the semester.
5. When will I know the result of my appeal?
It will take 3 working days to process your appeal. The IS office will send an e-mail to your NP student account.
WITHDRAWALS
1. When is the deadline for withdrawal from the programme and how do I withdraw?
The withdrawal deadline is end of the first week of the semester. You will need to fill out a withdrawal application form at the IS Office at Blk 53, Level 5.
2. Will I be refunded the course fees on withdrawal?
You will receive a refund of the fees paid if you withdraw during the FIRST week of the semester. However, you must have a VALID reason. There will not be any refunds if you withdraw from the module after the first week.
3. How will I know the result of my withdrawal?
You will be notified through an e-mail sent to your NP student account.
4. How soon can I expect to receive my refund?
Refunds if any, will be made within 3 – 4 weeks on receipt of your withdrawal application. It will be credited into the GIRO account which you have authorized for all transactions with the Polytechnic.
5. How can I check if the GIRO payment has been made for the refund of my course fees?
To view your bank account information, please login into your NPal Student Web Page at this URL Link - https://npalstudent.np.edu.sg/npstudent/ and look under Financial Services > GIRO Payment Bank Account Review.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE GRANTS
1. Who is eligible for the Foreign Language Grant?
If you have successfully enrolled into the Foreign Language Enhancement Programme, you are eligible for the Language Course Grant if your family's (total) monthly household income is less than $1500.
2. When is the deadline for the application for the Foreign Language Grant?
You must submit all necessary forms to IS Office at Blk 53, Level 5 within two weeks of the start of the programme.
3. Where can I get a copy of the application form for the Foreign Language Grant?
You can get this form from the IS Office at Blk 53, Level 5.
4. How will I know the result of my grant application?
You will be informed by Student Services on the outcome of your application.
5. Are there any conditions if I receive the Foreign Language Grant?
Yes. You must pass the programme. If you fail, you have to return the amount you received.
