 EP FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAMME FAQs 

1. Is it compulsory to take up a foreign language?

It is optional and offered to full-time students who wish to acquire basic communication skills in a particular foreign language and to discover more about its culture.

2. What are the benefits of learning a foreign language?

An employer will see you as a bridge to new clients or customers if you know a foreign language.  Students seeking careers in business, technology, social service or marketing will enhance their chances of success, if they have studied and are able to communicate in a foreign language.

3. What are the foreign languages being offered?

We are offering French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Spanish.

4. What do I get at the end of the Programme?

Graduating students will receive the “Statement of Enhancement Programme” which lists the Foreign Language modules you have passed.  Students who have completed all 6 French/Japanese/Korean modules in the EP system will receive the Diploma Plus Certificate in Foreign Language.

5. How do I know when to register for the Enhancement Programme?

You will receive an e-mail through your Lotus Notes account informing you of the registration dates under the Events & Announcements page. Announcements are also made through the IS website, notice boards and through your discipline schools.  Registration usually begins 1 – 2 months prior to the start of the new semester.

6. Can I register for more than one language at the same time?

Yes, you can if you can manage your time and your timetable permits.

You have to sit for a placement test conducted by a foreign language tutor and he/she will determine your proficiency level and place you accordingly.

8. Can an ex-NP student or a part-time student register for any foreign language in the EP system?

Only current full-time NP students are eligible to register for and attend the foreign language classes.

9. If I miss the registration deadline, can I still register?

Registration is only open during the Registration period.  If you miss the deadline, you will not be able to register.  You may want to consider registering in the following semester.

10. What happens if a class I am registered for has been cancelled?


A class may be cancelled due to insufficient
enrolment.  You will be notified of the cancellation and a full refund will be made to you through your bank account

11. Will I obtain credit exemption for IS modules when I enrol in the EP Programme?

Yes, students who complete the Basic French/Japanese/Korean 101 and 102 modules and are registered for the Basic French/Japanese/Korean 103 module will be given credit exemption for a Level 2 IS module (BCF/BCJ/BCK) with 2 credit units. This credit exemption for BCF/BCJ/BCK does not affect the computation of the student's GPA.

Students who do not want this credit exemption will have to write in to the School of IS.

12. Will I obtain exemptions in the EP Programme if I have completed BCF/BCJ/BCK?

Yes, students who have completed the BCF/BCJ/BCK modules and wish to further their foreign language studies in the EP Programme will be exempted from the relevant EP Basic 101 module. These students can then proceed to enrol in the relevant EP module at the 102 level.

13. How many Placement Tests can a student take in the EP Programme?

In order to be awarded the Diploma Plus Certificate in French/Japanese/Korean, students are required to complete the six sequential EP modules. The number of exemptions that are given based on the results of placement tests should not exceed two, Students may be exempted ONCE before the 103 level and ONCE after the 103 level and must sit for and pass the last module (Intermediate 202) in order to qualify for the award.
