IS AND THE COMMUNITY

Research trip to Vietnam by RESMET Students 14-22 March 2009 IS students from the RESMET Practical Research Methods module put their research skills to the test, not in their own backyard, but in Vietnam! Students left for Hanoi, Vietnam to find out more about the phenomenon behind Vietnamese foreign brides. They conducted street interviews and spoke with social workers, academics and the poor in Vietnam, leaving no stone unturned during the investigation.

To facilitate this vacation module, IS collaborated with NGOs including the Centre for Promoting Alternatives to Violence, The Asia Foundation, ActionAid and OxfamQuebec along with the Hanoi University for the Social Sciences and the Humanities. This overseas experience in Vietnam was certainly a milestone trip for students, who gained an invaluable experience in practical research methods and new insights into Vietnam and its social problems.

Racial Harmony Day 2009 at Yuhua Primary School
| Who says school is boring? A team of IS students was having fun at Yuhua Primary School during Racial Harmony Day. On 21st July 2009, a group of IS students worked with teachers and students of Yuhua Primary School to organise a day of games and activities to be played by different ethinic groups in Singapore to enhance racial harmony. From the toothy smiles to the long queues, students enjoyed themselves and at the same time, acquired a better understanding of the cultural games & activities played by the youths of different races. |

IS students’ collaboration with SPCA to support animal rights
Your learning journey is as interesting as you make it out to be! In July 2008, a team of IS students stretched their entrepreneurship flair to raise funds by selling IT products and ice creams on campus. Their tears, sweat and joy were well worth the effort to promote public awareness of being kind towards animals. With the funds raised, they collaborated with SPCA and CapitaLand to promote public awareness on animals rights at the Junction 8 shopping mall. CapitaLand sponsored the retail space for free to support this student project. All sales proceeds went towards SPCA to further champion their animal rights causes
