NP iPhone Project: Connecting with Millennial Students Through A Life-style Integrated Mobile Learning Experience

The proposed NP iPhone Project, a vision of the adoption of mobile-learning in Ngee Ann Polytechnic is premised on the modern educational theories of connectionism and constructivism that students learn most effectively when they are in community - co-creating content, collaborating and sharing with peers.   Based on a pedagogical and social focus, this m-learning initiative aims to broaden and deepen student engagement through a suite of academic, social and administrative applications that leverage the iPhone’s interaction paradigm.
Under the proposed iDUP (Apple Development University Programme), NP students will be engaged to design and develop native and web applications through access to the Software Development Kit and various development resources.

This initiative aligns and supports TLC’s e-competency framework to develop students’ digital media literacies in the domain of hand-held computing. The NP iPhone Project seeks to complement the existing MeL notebook scheme by providing a mobile pathway for students to access curriculum content as well as lifestyle and administrative applications, services and processes.

NP Community Learning Portal (NP-CLP)

The proposed Web 2.0 NP Community Learning Portal is envisaged as a focal point to support new teaching paradigms by engaging students to participate in the construction, peer-evaluation and discovery-cum-practice of questions.  A parallel objective is to tap on the collective intelligence of the NP learner community by enabling students to pose questions and contribute answers, facts or personal perspectives on curriculum-related topics.

The NP Community Learning Portal is conceived as a platform geared toward encouraging, facilitating and empowering students to design questions on concepts and principles they perceive as important and worthy, and the subsequent tasks of peer-evaluating and practicing the student-generated questions.
