Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) Collaborates with Unity Technologies (UTech)

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) Collaborates with Unity Technologies (UTech) to Set up a Game Design & Development Centre.

Unity Technologies’ General Manager (Asia), Mr John Goodale and Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of InfoComm Technology Director, Ms Angela Wee in the MOU signing ceremony on 22 March 2012.

Award-winning 3D game engine provider, Unity Technologies (UTech), and Singapore’s leading institution of higher learning, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), announced their partnership on 22 March 2012 to launch a Game Design & Development Centre to train students in the area of game art, design and development.

The Game Design & Development Centre will provide students a conducive environment to learning and acquiring the production know-how in game asset creation, game designing, level designing and game development.

In addition, the Centre will serve as a great launch pad for the aspiring game technopreneurs from the various IT and IDM courses in Ngee Ann Polytechnic to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams to incubate a game concept from the creation of game art to game design, level design and programming, using the award-winning Unity Pro 3D game engine, mentored by industry game practitioners.  This will give the students a head start in the game industry which traditionally has been dominated by big players.  With Unity, the students can more easily and independently create rich interactive 3D content on the web, mobile platform or the console.

From a MDA report based on DFC Intelligence 2010 data (http://www.mda.gov.sg/Industry/Video/IndustryOverview/Pages/Overview.aspx), the global games market was estimated to be worth $59.5b in 2010 and projected to grow to $70.1b in 2015, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.3%. Strong growth in the mobile and online games markets are expected to lead the trend.

The Singapore games sector has also seen a rapid expansion in recent years with an influx of leading international industry players such as Electronic Arts, LucasArts, Tecmo Koei and Ubisoft.  Singapore has also seen more home-grown game studios sprouting - MDA estimates about 62 games development, publishing and services companies, contributing to the vision of Singapore becoming a regional media hub with good capability of creating, publishing and distributing cutting edge original games content.

This UTech-NP collaboration will also benefit the secondary school students who participate in NP’s enrichment programmes and boot camps in game design and development.  Students would be taught to design and develop simple games using the engine.

UTech will also work with NP in game capability development for faculty and student and facilitate opportunities for student internship, immersion or study trips through their network of game companies.

UTech will also be sponsoring graduation prizes for the top graduates in the areas of game art, design and development for NP’s School of InfoComm Technology.
