 Kevin Chin Wee Min

“When I was young, the internet was young,” said Kevin Chin, remembering the birth of his interest in infocomm technology. As the field developed and with the growth of multimedia and animation, Kevin saw the opportunity to marry his interest in IT with his passion for traditional art. “I then knew that it was what I wanted to do,” he said.

At NP, he got to bolster his passion with the right skills. “The modules NP offered are what I would need as a multimedia developer. Aside from acquiring the relevant technical skills, I learnt the business side of things as well. I was also given ample time to explore, analyse and solve problems on my own,” said Kevin.

Since joining the polytechnic, Kevin has been putting his expertise to good use as a freelance multimedia artist. So far, he has handled about 10 projects for local clients. Money, however, is not the key driving force for his work.

“Last year, for instance, I did some photography and photo editing for the Singapore Association for the Deaf. I consider it a community service and was only too glad to help,” he said.

Kevin also applied successfully for enterprise funding at NP to start a business in promotional video production and web design. Currently planning to start a business that pools together like-minded people with unique skills, Kevin aims to create a 3D animation game that is innovative in every way.

Commenting on his future plans, Kevin said he hopes to pursue a communications degree and, of course, continue honing his IT skills.

Meanwhile, he is overwhelmed at being one of the winners of the Lee Kuan Yew Award.

“I feel very honoured to be selected from such a distinguished group of candidates, and will certainly work even harder to live up to the prestige,” he said.

He has fond memories of the School.   If Kevin had his way, the incubation lab on the fourth floor of block 27 would still be a secret, known only to a select few.

During his days in NP, this IT enthusiast frequently camped out by “his” Macintosh at this lab. It was the perfect location for him to work on his projects without distractions.

Kevin also lets us in on a little secret... he gets to do cool things at his special corner such as watching the latest blockbusters and playing the latest 3D animation games!

His advice:  “Do the things you like. When you enjoy what you’re doing, work will never feel like work.”

(Kevin Chin graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2007 with a Diploma in MMA with Merit. He also won the Lee Kuan Yew Award, MDA Gold Medal & Prize, Adobe Prize, and a Gold Certificate of Achievement in CCA).
