For Secondary Schools
Health in Motion (HiM)
- In recent years, Singapore has seen a growing number of citizens with obesity, especially among the younger population, as a result of unhealthy diet and affluent lifestyle. The School of Health Sciences is keen to promote healthy lifestyle among secondary school students and thus organises the "Health in Motion program". The objective is to challenge students to design creative activities that will help them or their friends to achieve fitness and reduce stress levels, with the ultimate aim to achieve better physical and mental health. These activities will be captured on video and submitted for the competition.
It is our desire that these students, having participated in the competition, may become catalysts for promoting healthy living in their respective schools. The competition will stimulate students to think creatively by sourcing and integrating information from various sources in developing their own plans. Implementation of their plan will give them a sense of ownership and empowerment in adopting a new healthy lifestyle..............<more>
Every Second Counts
- Each year, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 Singaporeans suffer heart attacks. About 50% of them die, without getting medical help. When the heart stops, death is virtually certain if no resuscitation is given within the first 10 minutes. During this short period, the victim’s life depends on the quick response of bystanders. If you are a bystander in this situation, would you know what to do until expert help arrives?
The main objective in this event “Every Second counts” is to highlight to our students the importance of rendering assistance as First responders in times of urgency. The knowledge of basic First Aid skills and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills will help in minimizing the severity of injury or sudden illness. Students will be involved in hands-on nursing activities e.g blood pressure taking, tube feeding and body mechanics etc. These skills are commonly needed in home situations and may help patients to reduce the length of stay at hospitals. This workshop is not only beneficial to students who are in the Red Cross, St John’s Ambulance, Scouts, Girl Guide, Boy’s Brigade and Girl’s Brigade, it is applicable to everyone. This knowledge and skills gained through this workshop will be useful to everyone at all times. After learning the First Aid and CPR skills, students will continue to take part in a competition among the participants. Students will compete on their skills and knowledge of First Aid and CPR........................................................................................<more>
