Mobile e-Learning for School of Health Sciences

The Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Health Sciences (HS) aims to provide a rich learning experience that prepares its students to function as competent registered nurses.  HS seeks to adopt innovative technologies and teaching strategies to prepare our students for their future roles in a technology-rich and rapidly changing healthcare industry.

HS has incorporated mobile technology in the training of its nursing students, using a mobile electronic device, under an initiative known as Ngee Ann Polytechnic Augmented Learning Media (NPALM). NPALM aims to promote independent learning amongst the students, by making available at their fingertips, resources that facilitate their learning in both the campus and during clinical attachment (CA).  The electronic device is loaded with databases and applications that drive students’ independent learning during CA. Other applications on the mobile devices were developed in-house such as the drug calculator, dialect translator, electronic logbook, medical abbreviations and so on.

Keeping abreast with the evolving technology, all year one students joining HS in April 2010 will be using Ipod Touch (8GB) for their mobile elearning. The device must not have phone or camera features in order to safeguard the anonymity and confidentiality of the patients. We are currently arranging the vendor to come to HS to conduct the sales. More details in relation to the sales and training will be released during the Induction Day. You may purchase the device from external vendors and we will help facilitate the downloading of in-house applications to your device in due time.

The cost of the mobile device is approximately $300. There is a loan scheme available for students who requires financial assistance (conditions apply). We are currently reviewing the details and will keep you updated. Stay tuned in for more details.
