Is there a demand for trained nurses?
As Singapore's population ages and the need for healthcare services increases, the demand for trained nursing professionals has continued to rise. As at end Mar 2004, there were approximately 9,000 nurses in the public healthcare sector. One quarter of these are foreign nurses. There are approximately 300 vacancies for nurses in public healthcare institutions and the demand for nurses will continue to increase.
There is in fact an acute worldwide shortage of nurses. Polytechnic nursing diplomas are internationally recognized qualifications and each year locally and internationally trained nurses from Singapore do leave to seek employment in other countries. This leakage, combined with the rising demand for healthcare services by our ageing and increasingly affluent society make nursing a stable and satisfying profession.
What facilities will Ngee Ann's nursing programme have?
To ensure that our nursing students receive a realistic training, Ngee Ann has developed training facilities which emulate those found in a health care environment. These facilities will include operating theatre, midwifery, gerontology and basic cardiac suport laboratories. The laboratories will house equipment found in a mordern hospital environment. The laboratories will be set up to act as simulated wards where students develop skills in a simulated real-life setting.
In addition to these facilities, Ngee Ann is currently developing life science laboratories which will provide nursing students with skills in biomedical science.
What will be the career advancements opportunities available to Ngee Ann graduates?
Polytechnic trained nurses are eligible for registration with the Singapore Nursing Board. This gives the liscence to practice as professional nurses. A polytechnic diploma in nursing is an internationally recognized qualification and graduates do have a high degree of mobility. Career opportunities are available in hospitals, polyclinics, specialist clinics, and organisations involved in clinical trials and research. Degree level nursing qualifications are offered by overseas universities and polytechnic graduates have been accepted into these programmes with appropriate exemptions.

Grade Point Average
1.4.1 GPA is used to measure the academic standing of a student and forms the basis of determining students’ performance ranking.
1.4.2 Current Grade Point Average (Current GPA) is calculated based on the graded modules taken in that semester as follows:
Sum of (Credit units x Grade point)______________
Current GPA = Total current semester credit units (graded modules)
1.4.3 The following example illustrates the computation of the current GPA for six modules with one non-graded module, in a particular semester.
