 Facilities

The School of Health Sciences has the latest state-of-the-art facilities used for nursing education. These include:

Patient Simulation Centre: The centre is aimed at giving students the opportunity to practise their nursing skills using the very equipment they will handle in an actual setting.

The Patient Simulation Centre is a vital component of our nursing curriculum. It can simulate all kinds of scenarios, including rare situations which students may not encounter during their clinical attachments. With the Patient Simulation Centre, the possibilities are tremendous.

The manikins are life-like, they can do everything except eat and sweat. In perfecting their skills on these "patients", our students will get over any fears of handling different medical conditions, including critical one such as respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

In a typical classroom scenario, some students will be in the ICU or Emergency Room to engage in a role play, monitoring the "patient's" condition. The patient's medical condition will change and the students will exercise clinical judgement and make decisions on how best to care, treat and save the "patient". The "patient" will then respond to the nursing care given. Ther vital signs, such as blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen level, can change accordingly.

Other students who are not involved in the simulation exercise will be seated in a viewing gallery outside to observe the proceedings and take part in the debriefing at the end of the session. Filming facilities are also made available to identify the learning points.

Nursing Labs: Eight simulated hospital wards with a total of 43 hospital beds, and full hospital equipment.

Anatomy and Physiology Labs: Two teaching labs with eight sets of full-sized skeletons, mannequins, skulls, and other anatomical models.

BCLS Lab : Ngee Ann Polytechnic was accredited by the National Resuscitation Council in Singapore as a Basic Cardiac Life Support Training Center in June 2006. Our current facilities include a BCLS Laboratory that can accomodate 50 students at any one session, and 30 mannikins for training and assessment purposes. Our pioneer cohort of Nursing students have just finished their training, supervised by 10 staff who are certified BCLS instructors, including 2 who are of Chief Instructor status.

Microbiology Labs: The School of Health Sciences shares four microbiology labs with the School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology. These include molecular microbiology diagnostic equipment, cell culture facilities, and immunology equipment.

More facilities are in the pipe-line to ensure that students get the latest equipment for their education.
