Student Services Office Media Backgrounder

What the Office Does
The function of the Student Services Office (SSO) is to promote student welfare and provide student-friendly conveniences.

A Friendly Face
SSO’s services include the administration of scholarships and financial assistance, counselling, job placement, career advice and other general services.

Students can also perform academic and administrative related transactions at the Student Services and Information Centre (SSIC) at The Atrium.

Scholarships
Ngee Ann has over 150 Scholarship awards, ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, for students who excel in their studies. These awards are sponsored by Ngee Ann Polytechnic and external donors. All full-time students can apply for the awards during the Scholarship Exercise held in July each year.

For new students who are among the best in their 'O' level cohort, they can qualify for the prestigious Ngee Ann Polytechnic Freshmen Scholarship.

Financial Assistance
Various financial assistance schemes are offered by Ngee Ann Polytechnic to ensure that no needy student is denied access to an education. These include:

  • The Tuition Fee Loan Scheme which covers up to a maximum of 75 per cent of the tuition fee. This loan will be available for the duration of the course.
  • The Public Service Commission (PSC) Study Loan (Interest-Free) which covers up to 25 per cent of the tuition fee plus a maximum amount of $1,000 for living expenses.
  • The NP Study Loan Scheme (Interest-Free) which offers up to $1,200 per academic year, depending on the student’s financial need.
  • Study Grant of $500 for an academic year.
  • The Rotary Club of Jurong Town Study Loan (Interest-Free) which offers a loan of up to $2,000 per academic year.
  • Bursaries which are awarded based on financial need and academic merit. The amount ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 for an academic year. Over 200 awards are available annually, sponsored by Ngee Ann and external donors.

Interest-free loans are also available to help students buy notebooks. Needy students may also approach the SSO to apply for rental of notebooks from the various schools/divisions.

Counselling
One of the SSO’s key functions is to provide a listening ear or helping hand to students who need psychological support.

Job Placement
The SSO organises talks and seminars on employment opportunities on an annual basis for students. These events will provide them with the opportunity to find jobs and meet representatives of the companies from all sectors of the economy.

Students who wish to secure a job, either during term time or upon graduation, can make use of the on-line Job Placement Service (JPS) provided by the SSO.

Career Advice
The SSO provides information to students and graduates on applications to local and overseas universities, including details on programmes that enjoy advanced standing at selected universities.

The SSO also assists students in making informed choices in career planning, development and managing career conflicts.

General Services
The SSO also provides a host of other services to students to enhance their stay in Ngee Ann. These include the Student Services Centre (SSC), NP Shuttle Bus Service, rental of lockers, issuance of tertiary concession cards for public transport, a lost and found service and the Interactive Student Guide.
