Student Development & Alumni Relations Office Media Backgrounder
What the Office Does
The Student Development & Alumni Relations (SDAR) Office aims to nurture student talent beyond the academic, through various initiatives like sports, cultural and extra-curricular activities, and giving guidance to the Co-curricular Activities (CCA) groups in campus. The Office also plans and coordinates industrial attachment programmes, and keep the Ngee Ann spirit alive by fostering close ties with its growing alumni.
Clubs and Societies
With more than 100 clubs and societies to choose from, students are spoilt for choice. Besides helping them to develop leadership and interpersonal skills, the CCA activities also offer a healthy outlet for relaxation and enable students to pick up soft skills like team bonding, leadership and communications.
The CCA groups are classified into five main categories below:
- Sports Clubs such as Aerobics Club, Canoeing Club, Dragon Boat Club, Divers Club and Magnum Force, a well-known cheerleading and dance club;
- Academic Societies whose members comprise students of the respective Schools. Examples include the Accountancy Society, Business Studies Society, and Film & Media Studies Society;
- Cultural & Arts Groups such as the Chinese Orchestra, Choir, NP Concert Band, DanceSport Club, Japanese Tsubasa Club and Song Composing Club;
- Special Interest Groups such as the Astronomy Club, Avionics Club, Computer Club, E-gaming Club, Hearing Impaired (HI) Club, and Photography Club;
- Religious Groups such as the Buddhist Society, Campus Crusade for Christ and Muslim Students Society.
Excellence Day and ACES Awards
Each year, Ngee Ann recognises outstanding student achievements in CCAs on the Student Excellence Day.
The Student Excellence Awards fall into various categories: Outstanding Society, National Achievement, Outstanding Sportsman/Sportswoman, Outstanding CCA, Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, Outstanding Contributions to NP, Community Service, Colours and Chairman’s Award.
The Colours Awards are in turn divided into two sub-categories – the Half Colours awards and the Full Colours awards:
- Half Colours awards are presented to those who have won silver or bronze medals in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic and other invitational competitions
- Full Colours awards are presented to the gold medalists in these competitions as well as national representatives.
Community Services
SDAR organises community service expeditions to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Sarawak and Vietnam. Some of these trips are part of the Youth Expedition Projects (YEP) organised by the Singapore International Foundation (SIF).
