 How It Works

You can choose from a wide array of electives within your discipline-specific curriculum as well as from the Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) modules. The interdisciplinary modules will be incorporated into your course curriculum at every level throughout the three years of your course. For balanced coverage, Ngee Ann Polytechnic offers a good spread across these five categories

  • Communication
The Communication modules are designed to help you communicate more confidently and effectively in various contexts and situations. They enable you to think critically, speak on issues, and apply information.

  • Entrepreneurship
The Entrepreneurship modules equip you with entrepreneurial skills to compete in a fast-changing environment. They provide you with the fundamental skills to manage people, processes, and resources efficiently and effectively in a business organisation.

  • Life Skills
The Life Skills modules are designed to groom you into a well-balanced, purposeful, self-reliant, and socially responsible individual. The skills acquired in these modules enable you to successfully manage your public and personal life.

  • Media & the Arts
The Media & the Arts modules help you gain an appreciation of how the media and the arts affect the individual and the world. They provide an opportunity to cultivate your senses.

  • Science & Technology
The Science & Technology modules keep abreast of the latest developments in the constantly changing technology arena, so that you can understand the impact and applications of new technologies.

"In the New Economy, many careers call for both hard and soft skills. With the Ngee Ann Learning Model (NLM), our goal is to produce professionals with life-long employability. By equipping our graduates with a broad perspective and a broader skills base, we envisage that they will be better-placed to effectively respond to change and to manage the complex issues of the future."

"Change is constant ¦ Effective change management calls for a flexible mind with the abilities and skills to seek, process, and apply knowledge from diverse sources."

    Mr Garth S. Aldrich

State University of New York

"I have picked up important social and enrichment skills through modules such as 'Oral Communication' and 'Sports & Wellness' ¦ I am more confident working as part of a team on projects, or doing presentations."

  James Yong

"This is a good idea on Ngee Ann's part. My view is, whether a person succeeds or not depends on the soft skills, and not so much the technical skills...One reason why employees lack communication skills and can't think of ideas is because many do not read beyond their discipline. We need a broad-based culture of learning."

    Goh Ai Lian
Senior Manager Human Resource, Singapore Computer Systems Limited

"Students who have taken the best advantage of the NLM will become more interesting individuals in a holistic sense ¦ Imagine how much more interesting dinner parties can become, when everyone sitting round a table can talk about a wide variety of subjects."

  Veronica Leng
Principal Lecturer, School of Film & Media Studies

"Nowadays, employees need to multi-task and be empowered in different skills. The NLM is good preparation ground."

    Wong Yoke Kuan
