More than 400 students and staff pledged to keep the environment clean and green on a "Commitment Tree" built on campus. It was made entirely from recycled products. Among those present to make the pledge were children from our child care centre. Everyone was encouraged to make a pledge for the environment on leaf-shaped pieces of recycled paper, which were then placed on the "Commitment Tree".

A charity drive to create environmental awareness while encouraging community service was organised. Our students and staff donated used items like clothes, books, shoes, sports goods and bicycles to children of the Gracehaven Children's Home.

 December 1995

A paper usage survey was conducted to identify ways of reducing paper wastage. As the costs of paper had increased over the years, it wasimportant to ensure efficient use of paper to avoid wastage. A slew of measures were introduced to reduce paper consumption. Some measures suggested by the survey respondents include:

  • Sending documents and filing them electronically
  • Requesting students to hand in assignments on diskettes
  • Printing and photocopying on both sides of paper

One of the main findings was that the average monthly paper consumption for the whole polytechnic increased in 1995 as compared to the usage in 1994 for photostating paper whilst the consumption rate for duplicating paper dropped. The costs of all types of paper increased tremendously from 1994 to 1995.

 November 1996

Our students designed large ribbons using recyclable and reusable materials along the theme of "Art for a Healthy Earth". The best ones we selected to be sent to the UN Exhibit Collection. The United Nations International Ribbons Programme promotes environmental awareness around the world. Ngee Ann was the first tertiary institution in Singapore to send "green ribbons" to the UN.

About 180 student and staff volunteers from the School of Engineering cleaned the Pulau Ubin northern beach.
The group cleaned the beach within 3 hours.

The Environmental Challenge was launched as a collaboration between Ngee Ann and British Petroleum to raise environmental consciousness in young Singaporeans. About 24 groups from 15 secondary schools and 3 Junior Colleges took part. The Prize Presentation cum Exhibition for the Environmental Challenge was held in April 1998. Among the winning projects were a vermicomposting project, a rooftop garden and a water recycling system. The group from Raffles Girls School clinched the top prize. They came up with a creative method of disposing of organic rubbish using earth worms from Australia, and at the same time producing fertilizer as waste products.

46 secondary school students worked on 16 projects in the Millenium Garden Composter Competition. Their task was to turn kitchen and garden waste into nutrients and soil conditioners.

The aim of the competition was to inculcate environmental consciousness and social responsibility in young Singaporeans through the concepts of recycling & reuse. It was also meant to provide opportunities for them to showcase their creativity in designing and fabricating a garden composter. All entries were exhibited during the Ministry of Enviroment's Clean and Green Week 2000 so as to promote sharing of ideas & provide a common platform for interaction amongst students.

 November 2001

Members of the Campus Green Team (CGT) organised the 'Go Pink' Jumble Sale. Proceeds from the sale were donated to the Sentosa's Underwater World for the upkeep of the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin (or lovingly called Pink Dolphins.)

CGT members collected over 1,500 donated items from Ngee Ann's staff and students. Items included books, toys and household appliances. The charity drive successfully raised about $2,550 for the endangered dolphins.

 November 2001

In conjunction with the Ministry of Environment's Clean and Green Week 2001, the "Design an Ecogarden Competition" competition was organised for secondary schools. The idea was to have students design an ecogarden for their respective schools as a place for ecology studies as well as recreation. Students had to design and conceptualise an ecogarden as a 3-D model using recyled materials. The 1st prize winner was CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School.
