| Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) was set up in 1963 by the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a philanthropic foundation, as Ngee Ann College with only 116 students. Today, the polytechnic is one of Singapore’s leading institutions of higher learning with over 16,000 full-time students, about 2,000 part-time students and a vibrant alumni community of more than 130,000. We offer 48 full-time courses that cover diverse areas ranging from business, media, humanities and social sciences to IT, engineering, life sciences, and health sciences. Pioneering new initiatives
A trailblazer, NP has introduced various initiatives to enhance and enrich the students’ learning experience. As the first polytechnic in Singapore to introduce interdisciplinary studies to students, we pioneered a broad-based and multidisciplinary approach to education. NP was also the first polytechnic in Singapore to implement Mobile e-Learning in 1999, integrating a notebook ownership scheme, a wireless campus network and an e-learning platform. The entire polytechnic is now fully enabled for students to connect to the wireless network. About 95 per cent of all teaching modules are now available online. In 2002, NP introduced a customised talent development programme, a first-ever among the local polytechnics. Named The Christieara Programme, it grooms high-calibre students to give them an edge in preparing for their careers and undergraduate studies. Forging industry partnerships
Another key thrust for NP is forging partnerships with the industry and research partners to enrich students' learning journey and keep them up-to-date with market practices. NP prides itself on being at the forefront of innovation. The Centres of Innovation (COIs) set up by NP in partnership with Spring Singapore are a testimony to the Polytechnic's relentless effort at the frontiers of technology. The two COIs – in the areas of Environmental & Water Technology and Marine & Offshore Technology – will provide applied R&D and technology support to local enterprises. With more than 30 years of experience in consultancy services, research and development, and capability training, the COIs at NP are poised to be catalyst for change in respective local enterprises.
